NEWS | How “beer detectives” solved a local brewery’s beer complications

When Biff Morehead, of Smiling Toad Brewery, suddenly began encountering a persistent issue with one of his flagship beers not turning out right, he bought new ingredients and tried again. When that didn’t do the trick, he considered pausing the taps and breaking down the system. Before he could do that, though, he learned about the beer detectives at Fermly in Denver. Fermly’s sud-sleuths, Emily and Danny Wang, were able to identify the issue so it could be fixed. How did Fermly figure out what was going wrong at Smiling Toad, and what do the scientists at a “craft beer lab” do day to day – like, seriously? We answer these burning questions.
