Dust storm, fatal crash close I-70 between Aurora and Kansas
The Colorado State Patrol closed both directions of Interstate 70 between Aurora and the Kansas border because of a dust storm caused by high winds and multiple accidents.
Wind gusts as high as 70 mph have been recorded across the eastern Plains sending debris and dust into the air and making conditions “almost impossible to see anything,” said Gary Cutler with the CSP.
At least one person was killed and as many as 15 others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash near Hugo, which was closed at Air Park Road just east of E-470.
Because of the treacherous conditions, Cutler said CSP does not know how many accidents have occurred.
“Conditions are so bad that it’s really hammering our troopers and emergency personnel as getting a handle as far as what exactly is out there,” Cutler said.
Wind speeds across the eastern Plains were expected to remain around 40 to 50 mph with gusts of up to 70 mph until early evening, said Robert Joopmeiners, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder.
