Upon retiring as a Colorado State University professor in 1985, Maxwell and his wife, Barbara, made a chance stop at an auction in Iowa on their way to Maine for vacation. They came home with 13 antique washing machines, and thus began his decades-long collection. Maxwell has now collected and restored over 1,400 washing machines from all decades and honors them in his educational museum in Eaton, Colo.. (Video by Skyler Ballard)
