Switchbacks Folo

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks’ already small recovery window ahead of Tuesday’s game against Orange County got even shorter as the Switchbacks and San Antonio FC waited roughly two hours Saturday for their game to start as hail and excess water were removed from Weidner Field on Saturday.

Portions of the field proved unplayable despite the Switchbacks staff’s pre-game efforts.

“There’s not (any flow), and you’ve got to expect that,” coach Steve Trittschuh said. “That’s what we talked about when we saw the field and how it was going to play.”

Saturday’s 1-1 draw finished just around 10 p.m. and left Trittschuh little time and few bodies to prepare for Orange County, which has three points on the Switchbacks after Saturday’s result.

Luke Vercollone, JJ Tambe and Taeseong Kim are not expected to be available Tuesday as they continue to recover from injury, meaning some of the guys who logged heavy minutes on a soaked field will have to be ready to do so again a couple days later.

“We’re going to have to make some changes for Tuesday,” Trittschuh said. “We’ll come in tomorrow and see how (they’re) feeling.”

Sunday’s session seemed to be geared toward recovery, while the team planned to get a light practice in Monday. While there won’t be much time for field work, there’s still plenty to work on.

Featured Local Savings

“Every game there’s still those bad choices we make that are costing chances on goal or goals,” Trittschuh said.

The coach mentioned a couple defensive miscues that put goalkeeper Steward Ceus in tough spots on Saturday. The keeper was perfect on the night outside of San Antonio’s equalizer from the penalty spot, making five saves.

“It was very much play risk-free, play-safe football. Obviously the conditions were crazy,” the Switchbacks keeper said.

“In the back, we were just trying to keep it safe and not cause any unforced errors that would end up hurting us.”

Tuesday’s game presents an opportunity for the local club to get three points back from an Orange County side that earned a 1-0 home win over the Switchbacks in late April. The only goal in that game was a penalty kick in the sixth minute with Moise Pouaty in goal for Colorado Springs. Ceus has taken control between the posts since the club’s U.S. Open Cup elimination. He hasn’t allowed a goal in the run of play since the first half of the June 17 win over Portland.

Since the early Timbers 2 goal, the Switchbacks have outscored opponents 6-1 and earned seven points in the last three matches. The club hopes to get back to winning ways against Orange County.

“It’s one of those games… I feel the point is ok,” Trittschuh said. “We still had some chances I thought we could’ve won the game.”
