Switchbacks, San Antonio FC ford their way to sloppy tie

On a night where some balls skipped off the surface and out of reach while others came to a complete stop depending on how much water was sitting on the pitch, the only goals of Saturday night’s 1-1 United Soccer League match between San Antonio FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks came from the penalty spot at a wet Weidner Field.

The game was delayed until just after 8 p.m. as Switchbacks staffers cleared the field after an early evening hail storm.

The hosts got off to a quick start, as a long pass from Pascal Eboussi sprung Jordan Burt into a one-on-one situation but his shot was just wide of goal. Minutes later, Burt looked to have another breakaway, but the ball traveled through a puddle down the right channel and came to an abrupt stop, forcing Burt to retreat and play a cross into the area.

The Switchbacks were the first to convert when Jordan Burt laid a a ball off for Shane Malcolm, who was taken down by the visiting keeper as he cut the ball back towards the middle of the box. Burt scored his fifth league goal of the season in first-half stoppage time to give the hosts an advantage at the break.

The second half saw the visitors level things when Rafa Castillo beat Steward Ceus for a goal in the 66th minute.

The visitors pushed for a go-ahead goal over the next 10 minutes, but Ceus maybe a couple of key saves.

The hosts created a pair of late corner kicks but could not find a winner.

The Switchbacks have a quick turnaround, as Orange County is set to visit Weidner Field on Tuesday.
