More traffic fatalities make 2018 a deadly year on the road

The recent carnage on Colorado Springs-area roads continued Friday with two more deadly crashes, raising the month’s toll to six.

In June, five people have died in crashes in the city and one has been killed in unincorporated El Paso County. Friday’s fatalities raised the year’s death toll — on pace to surpass last year’s record 39 traffic fatalities — to 23 in Colorado Springs. Last year at this time, there were 14 in the city.

In the second of Friday’s fatal crashes, Vernon S. Werre, 48, of Colorado Springs died when the car being driven by his brother ran a stop sign around 2:15 a.m. at North Hancock Avenue and Nichols Boulevard west of Palmer Park and hit a bridge wall, police said.

Vernon Werre died at the scene. His brother, Kevin Werre, 44, was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to a local hospital. His condition and the nature of his injuries were not available.

Werre was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, police said.

A few minutes after 2 a.m. Friday, a motorcyclist died when he lost control while northbound on North Powers Boulevard and struck a curb at the intersection with East Palmer Park Boulevard. The name of the motorcyclist has not been released.

Of the 23 traffic deaths this year, police said:
