Colorado breweries host fundraising events to help 416 fire recovery
Breweries across Colorado are lending a hand to 416 fire victims and recovery efforts with a statewide fundraiser Saturday.
Organized by Durango-based Ska Brewing, Save the San Juans Saturday has recruited more than 25 brewing companies, bars and restaurants in the state — including Bristol Brewing Company, Fossil Craft Beer Company, Goat Patch Brewing and Front Range BBQ — to help raise $500,000 for Durango’s Community Emergency Relief Fund.
“Ska distributes our beer, so we’re tied intimately to them,” said Bristol Brewing Company General Manager Derik Gentz. “They’re our brother of beer, and we want to do what we can to support them.”
“We’ve had fires so close to home, and we love Colorado and our mountains. This is our way of giving back to the San Juan community while supporting local craft brewers,” said Goat Patch Brewing Director of Operations Johannah Murphy.
Bristol, Goat Patch and Fossil will donate $1 from every purchased pint and Front Range BBQ will donate $2 for every pint of Ska Brewing’s Mexican Logger.
The goal is phase 1 of the fund, which is administered by Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado. The foundation plans to use the $500,000 to help 750 to 1,000 residents in La Plata and San Juan counties for immediate expenses, including food, transportation and shelter.
Donations to CERF have exceeded $145,000, The Durango Herald reported Wednesday.
The Community Foundation serving Southwest Colorado joined a group of concerned citizens, businesses and community leaders that established the Southwest Colorado Disaster Assistance in the midst of the fire. The organization hopes to more efficiently match those in need with entities providing assistance.
Southwest Colorado Disaster Assistance started accepting applications for those needing financial assistance Monday. They expect to receive more than 1,000 applications in the first week.
“Hundreds of people have lost employment due to the 416 fire, and with one in four employees working in the region’s tourism industry, there is a tremendous need,” said Theresa Blake, the spokeswoman for Durango Area Tourism Office, which helped establish Southwest Colorado Disaster Assistance.
