During a frustrating evening at the Kazan Arena when the 2010 champions struggled to break through the stubborn Iranian defense, Diego Costa scored on a deflection for a 1-0 win on Wednesday.

Costa scored in the 54th minute after being set up by Andres Iniesta. The powerful striker turned in the area and took a shot that deflected off Ramin Rezeian before bouncing back onto Costa’s knee.

Brazil says FIFA dismissed team’s VAR complaint

Sochi, Russia: The Brazilian soccer federation says FIFA has dismissed its complaint over the use of video review in the team’s World Cup opener against Switzerland.

The federation said Wednesday FIFA didn’t specifically address the plays contested by Brazil: non-calls on a push inside the area before Switzerland’s equalizer and a penalty on Gabriel Jesus.

Iranian staffer hospitalized during match with Spain

Kazan, Russia: A member of the Iranian national team staff was hospitalized Wednesday after the team was denied a goal following a video review against Spain.

Iran coach Carlos Queiroz did not reveal the identity of the person.
