Tuesday’s predicted thunderstorms have escalated to a tornado watch.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Colorado Springs and El Paso County, and most of the eastern part of the state, until 7 p.m.

Eastern El Paso County is likely to see the worst of it, the service said, warning of hail up to 2 inches in diameter, wind gusts of 60 mph, lightning, heavy rain and “possibly a tornado.” Thunderstorms are expected to diminish after midnight, it said.

The service also issued a flash flood watch for part of northeast Colorado, where heavy rainfall is expected.

Tuesday’s severe weather comes on the heels of two hail-producing storms across the Pikes Peak region over the past two weeks.

Southern Colorado Springs and Fountain saw a historic hail storm June 12 that battered houses and busted windows, resulting in about 12,000 insurance claims. Hail reached the size of tennis balls in what weather experts are calling the worst hailstorm in 20 years.

Golf ball to baseball sized hail also pummeled Louisville, outside of Boulder, Tuesday morning, before moving across the Denver area for the second day in a row. The damage from those storms is still being assessed.
