The Switchbacks departed Colorado Springs without their leading scorer for Sunday’s game at Portland and returned with their second win of the season away from Weidner Field.
Luke Vercollone, who owns a team-leading four goals, spent Father’s Day at home with a slight injury and saw his squad score in bunches in the second half of a 4-1 victory over Timbers 2, which sat fourth in the United Soccer League’s Western Conference standings following the loss.
Harold Hanson got the hosts off on the front foot when he chased down a long ball and chipped Switchbacks keeper Steward Ceus from just outside the box. Portland took that lead to the break before the surge.
Jordan Burt curled in his third goal of the season off an assist from the newest official member of the squad, Karsten Hanlin, in the 51st minute to start the Switchbacks’ scoring.
Four minutes later the duo duplicated its effort, as Burt matched Vercollone for the team lead in goals with a blast that caught the underside of the crossbar to put the visitors in front.
Marty Maybin, who made the start up top, scored his first league goal of the season in the 70th minute before AJ Ajeakwa scored the final tally in the 79th minute. Shane Malcolm and Josh Suggs set up the insurance goals, giving the Switchbacks assists on all four scores.
Portland owned a 14-13 advantage in shots, putting three on goal. Colorado Springs converted four of its five looks on frame.
The win puts the Switchbacks in the eighth and last Western Conference playoff spot on goal differential. They host Fresno FC on Saturday.
