Switchbacks attack bottled up in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS • A week ago, a late goal undid the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Saturday in St. Louis, an early goal was too much to overcome in the team’s first road contest of the season. One constant was the Switchbacks’ inability to find the back of the net, as the Switchbacks dropped a second 1-0 result.St. Louis’ Kyle Greig netted the game’s only goal, racing to the corner of the penalty area and chipping Switchbacks goalkeeper Steward Ceus, who had left his line. The Switchbacks got on the attack after a slow first 15 minutes that nearly saw St. Louis double its lead off a free kick in the 13th minute.Steve Trittschuh’s side earned a handful of corner kicks in the first half and failed to convert.

Saeed Robinson looked to have a breakaway to goal in the second half but was taken down by a tackle in the box before substitute Toby Uzo got a head on a cross late  only to see the St. Louis goalkeeper preserve his clean sheet.Colorado Springs hasn’t scored since Jordan Burt’s penalty kick in the 55th minute of the season opener. AJ Ajeakwa’s goal in the 25th minute of the March 17 opener remains the Switchbacks’ lone goal in the run of play. The Switchbacks will look to get their first road points of the season Wednesday against the Swope Park Rangers, the back-to-back Western Conference champions.
