Manitou Springs 9, Colorado Springs Christian School 6

At Manitou Springs: For the first time this season the Colorado Springs Christian baseball team held a lead. The Lions led by two in sixth inning, but Manitou Springs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, and shut out CSCS in the seventh for the win.

Matt Johnson hit a two-RBI double, and freshman Hunter McWilliams had four hits and an RBI for the Lions. Ben Washburn batted in one run for CSCS (0-3).

CSCS pitchers were solid through six innings, striking out 11 total batters. Washburn fanned eight and McWilliams struck out three.

Manitou Springs’ Hunter Zentz was 4 for 4 with two RBIs, while Zak Talbot, Stephen Gentzel, Joey Allen, Christian Mack and Cameron Biette batted in one run each.

The Mustangs are 1-2.

Pine Creek 13, Doherty 0

At Pine Creek: Pine Creek got off to a quick start, scoring six runs in a shortened 5A Colorado Springs Metro league win over Doherty.

Pine Creek threw a one-hitter in the five-inning game. Doherty’s Henry Butterfield had the Spartans’ lone hit.

The Eagles remain undefeated at 4-0 and are 2-0 in league play. Doherty is 2-0 and is searching for its first conference win.

Palmer 8, Widefield 7

At Widefield: Widefield scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh in an attempt to overcome its four-run deficit, but fell just short. Palmer scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to create a comfortable lead that ultimately granted the Terrors their first win of the season.

Brennan Heitz had three hits and three RBIs for the Gladiators.

Sand Creek 9, Florence 3

At Sand Creek: Issiah Hernandez batted in three runs and Daxton Dawson and Taber Banks had two RBIs each as Sand Creek cruised to a nonconference win over Florence.

Nathan Gipprich earned the win on the mound for the Scorpions (1-4) with 5.1 innings pitched and seven strikeouts.

Pueblo South 7, Mesa Ridge 5

At Pueblo South: Mesa Ridge chipped away at the deficit in the late innings of a nonconference game, but the comeback fell short.

Reece Bishop had three hits and an RBI for the Grizzlies (2-2), and Jarod Volcic had two hits and batted in one run.

Calhan 9, Byers 1

At Byers: After three scoreless innings, Calhan broke through scoring three runs in the fourth, five in the sixth, and topped it off with one run in the sixth to earn a nonconference win over Byers.

Brayden Dillingham led the Bulldogs with a three-run home run and earned the win on the mound with five strikeouts through four innings.

Jacob Bolduc pitched a near-perfect three innings for Calhan (4-1), fanning eight batters through 10 at-bats.

St. Mary’s Spring Invitational

Evangelical Christian 6, St. Mary’s 1

At St. Mary’s: After allowing St. Mary’s to tie the tournament matchup in the bottom of the sixth, ECA scored five runs in the next half inning to claim the win.

Benjamin DeRuiter and Cameron Rawlings each had two hits and one RBI for the Eagles (3-2). Charlie Schwinck batted in one run.

Daniel Perry got the win on the mound, throwing a two-hitter through 6.1 innings and striking out eight batters.

Tournament host St. Mary’s (0-4) will face Swink and Buena Vista next.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Cheyenne Mountain 8, Conifer 2

At Cheyenne Mountain: Cheyenne Mountain scored four goals in the third quarter on the way to a nonconference victory.

August Johnson had four goals for Cheyenne Mountain (4-0), while James LaCerte had a goal and two assists.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Palmer Ridge 2, Liberty 1

At D-20 Stadium: Clutch shooting by Sarah Miller lifted the Bears to a last-minute nonconference win over Liberty.

After a rocky first half, Miller found the net in the 55th minute to tie the game at one.

“The first half was not the prettiest soccer we’ve played, we were getting outworked a little bit,” Palmer Ridge coach Nick Odil said. “But they started working hard and getting after it in the second half and it allowed us to get some opportunities.”

After having to leave the field for some blood on her knee, Miller returned to the pitch taped and ready to go, and found the sweet spot again two minutes before the final horn to lock in the win.

“She hit both shots from the same spot on the edge of the 18 on the right side,” Odil said. “The first one she beat the defender and hit it in the top left, and then beat the defender again and sent it in the bottom left. It was some great finishing.”

Courtney Cowels scored the Lancers’ lone goal in the first half.

Palmer Ridge is 2-1-1. Liberty is 0-4-1.

Green Mountain 3, Lewis-Palmer 1

At Lewis-Palmer: All of the action was saved for the second half as Green Mountain scored three goals in the final 40 minutes of a nonconference win. Lewis-Palmer is 2-2-1.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Mesa Ridge 7, Falcon 0

At Mesa Ridge: Michaela Welch battled back from a first-set loss at No. 3 singles to beat Falcon’s Schuyler DeHoyos and preserve Mesa Ridge’s 4A Region 6 sweep of Falcon.

Welch won the remaining two sets 6-4, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Mesa Ridge’s Kylee Bunnell defeated Emmalee Root in three sets after dropping the first 4-6. She came back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-1, respectively.

The Grizzlies are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Falcon is winless and will have the final week in March off from match play.

BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING

Coronado 134, Palmer 39

At Coronado: The Cougars claimed their first dual win of the season with a 5A CSML victory over Palmer, winning all but one event.

The Coronado 200 medley relay team of Hunter Tenpas, Jackson Sawyer, Alex Spiecker and Adam Austin kicked off the meet with a win in 1:47.28. Tenpas, Austin and Spiecker also went on to win individual races. Tenpas won the 200 IM in 2:18.41, Austin claimed the 50 free in 23.41 and Spiecker won the 100 free in 53.95.

Palmer’s Kory Crutcher was the Terror’s lone first-place finisher, winning the 500 free in 6:12.90, more than 23 seconds in front of the field.
