Air Force snubbed in men’s basketball All-Mountain West selections, continuing a trend

Air Force was entirely shut out in voting for all-Mountain West slots, continuing a trend.
Nevada’s Caleb Martin was named Player of the Year as the awards voted upon by coaches were announced Tuesday. Martin was joined on the first team by teammate Jordan Caroline, Boise State’s Chandler Hutchison, Fresno State’s Deshon Taylor and Wyoming’s Justin James.
Colorado Springs native Alan Herndon was an all-defensive pick by the coaches for his work at Wyoming.
Air Force placed no players on the top three teams or had anyone receive honorable mention.
The two teams that finished below the Falcons in the standings, Colorado State and San Jose State, had representatives among the four players in the honorable mention category.
In the media voting, which was released on Sunday and included a vote from The Gazette’s Brent Briggeman, Trevor Lyons received honorable mention. The Gazette’s ballot had Lyons on the third team.
In Mountain West play, Lyons ranked sixth in the conference in assists, sixth in steals, sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio and 11th in minutes played. The guard also averaged 9.5 points in league play and was often the calming presence on a team that gave the majority of its playing time to sophomores. In Air Force’s six league wins, Lyons averaged 11.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.3 steals.
Air Force hasn’t placed a player on the top three teams since sophomore Tre’ Coggins was a third-team selection in 2013-14. Michael Lyons, Trevor’s older brother, had been a first-team pick the year before that.
In football this past season Air Force was the only team in the conference without a first-team pick and had only offensive lineman Alex Norton among second-team picks. This despite a 4-4 conference record that was topped by only five of the league’s 12 teams.
In the women’s awards announced on Monday the Falcons garnered no players on the top three teams or honorable mention despite finishing eighth in the 11-team league, though freshman Kaelin Immel was named Freshman of the Year. The league’s coaches named Wyoming’s Joe Legerski as coach of the year over Air Force’s Chris Gobrecht. Legerski’s team was picked second in the preseason poll, while Gobrecht’s Falcons were picked last (receiving fewer than half the points of the next-highest team) before winning a program-record five conference games – including a win over Legerski’s squad.
