Colorado Springs parks officials will unveil a draft master plan for North Cheyenne Canon Park Tuesday.

The master plan process aims to catalog the park’s resources, highlight potential problems and outline opportunities for improvement. The last plan for North Cheyenne Canon Park was finished in 1999; such plans typically have a life span of up to 15 years.

Representatives of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services will display the draft plan at an open house at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cheyenne Mountain High School, 1200 Cresta Road, city spokeswoman Jennifer Schreuder said in a release. The draft also is available at coloradosprings.gov/nccmasterplan.

The eight-month master plan process was debated at multiple meetings the city hosted. While some say they support the new plan, others oppose change at the park on the city’s southwest side.

Others opposed the development of the new plan because of its connection to the Strawberry Hill land exchange where the city swapped 182 acres of land in the area with The Broadmoor in exchange for 371 acres of property split between 14 parcels.

If the master plan had been completed earlier it would have included the Strawberry Hill property. And throughout much of the process a lawsuit seeking to overturn the swap was in the Colorado Court of Appeals, so many opponents said the city should wait on the plan until that case was decided.

Last month the court unanimously upheld the land swap, but representatives for the local nonprofit behind the lawsuit, Save Cheyenne, have said they plan to ask the Colorado Supreme Court to take up the case.

Once the draft plan is made public, residents can submit comments and suggestions for additional changes to nccmasterplan@springsgov.com until March 18, the release said.
