3 Count: CSW crowns new champions
From the WWE to local independent federations, there’s no shortage of pro wrestling news. With our new weekly 3 Count blog, Gazette Sports designer and lifelong pro wrestling fan Derek Kuhn looks at the top three industry stories and gives his take on them. This 3 Count features results from and Kuhn’s take on Colorado Springs Wrestling’s Dec. 23, 2017 show.
1. CSW crowns new champions
In a chaotic night, Jimbo Lucas defeated No. 1 contender Cormac Battle in a CSW title match. It was a good outing by both, with Battle performing some great spots with his trombone including a tope suicida fake-out that ended with Battle blaring the instrument, shocking Lucas and his entourage. Lucas played the arrogant champion well. WWE could learn how to book a heel champion from how CSW has booked Lucas – strong, not necessarily needing to cheat to win but doing so anyway.
After Lucas introduced Battle to Mr. Lock-o, a padlock placed in a sock, and got the pinfall, the CSW champion challenged Mop Boy Ska Rubin to a title match. In a quick affair that saw Lucas dominate Rubin, Mop Boy scored the pinfall victory after Lucas’ manager, Games Master, inadvertently threw powder into the champion’s eyes. Seizing the opportunity, Mop Boy rolled up Lucas for the three count.
The crowd cheered as Mop Boy celebrated. It was a heart-warming sight, as the plucky underdog has had a rough stretch lately in CSW.
Ruben’s reign as CSW champion would be short-lived …
2. CSW says good bye to Danger Dean
CSW promoter once told me there’s a reason Danger is Dean’s first name and now I know why. The Dangerous One lives up to his name. Not many wrestlers have the intestinal fortitude to put their career on the line against someone as renowned as Lucha Underground star Marty “The Moth” Casaus, but Dean isn’t your average grappler.
Personally, this was my favorite match of the night. The crowd was hot for Marty, who played the off-kilter wrestler well, but Danger Dean’s reception was on par with his opponent’s. The match featured back-and-forth action, including Marty tossing Dean into the crowd’s chairs, Dean hitting a nice top-rope hurricanrana and Marty nailing two curb stomps.
In the end, Marty was victorious, using a TKO and middle-rope curb stomp to put away the Dangerous One. After the match, Marty cut off Dean’s hair and, harkening back to Lucha Underground where he stuffed Killshot’s dog tags in his trunks, stuffed Dean’s hair in his trunks – great stuff.
Marty then left Dean in the ring. The Dangerous One was slow to get up, but as he did the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Marty even came back out to give Dean his lock of hair back. Dean accepted the hair before stuffing it into Marty’s trunks, at which point the crowd, of about 250 people, roared in laughter.
3. Danger Dean done with CSW?
After Mop Boy Ska Rubin won the CSW championship, Danger Dean made his way to the ring carrying his “Colorado Cash In” contract. The referee called for the bell and Dean speared Ruben before gaining the quick pinfall victory, becoming the new CSW champion.
It remains to be seen how CSW will address the situation. Will Dean be allowed to compete in CSW after losing the Loser Leaves Town match? Will Mop Boy and Lucas fight it out for the belt again, or will CSW set up a championship tournament like WWE’s King of The Ring? Only time will tell.
