Investigators are searching for a man suspected of child abuse after a toddler was hospitalized with severe head injuries and a lacerated liver.

Joshua James Gonzales, 21, is wanted on suspicion of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators suspect the injuries were inflicted on Monday, Sept. 11 in the 1400 block of South Pierson Street. The incident was not reported until Thursday, when the toddler and his mother, at an elementary school in Denver, were spotted and the child was in dire need of medical attention, the sheriff’s office said. The toddler, who was taken to a local hospital, is expected to survive.
