Sean McFarland’s goal lifts Switchbacks over San Antonio
When Sean McFarlane’s soccer-playing days conclude, he might look into becoming a soothsayer.
The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC defender scored off a header from a free kick in the 45th minute to give the Switchbacks a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten San Antonio FC at Weidner Field on Saturday.
“Coming into the game I told my best friend I felt like I got one today,” McFarlane said of his second goal of the season.
After more than half a dozen corner kicks failed to do the trick for the Switchbacks (6-5-5) they got a free kick from just outside the box on essentially the final play of the first half.
Masta Kacher delivered a ball with pace into the box and McFarlane redirected the cross into the goal.
“Going into half everybody starts falling asleep a little bit,” McFarlane said. “We stayed focus because that’s what the coach wanted, stayed focused for 90 minutes.”
The Switchbacks carried possession in the first half against a San Antonio squad content to sit back and look for counters. That led to the Switchbacks getting seven first-half counters and 53.3 percent of the possession.
The performance was the Switchbacks’ best this season, coach Steve Trittschuh said.
“To get a shutout against a hot team like this I think that’s a good momentum thing for us going,” Trittschuh said.
San Antonio (10-1-4) turned up the offense in the final 20 minutes, despite playing most of that time a man down after goalie Diego Restrepo was shown straight red for tackling Kevaughn Frater just outside the box.
Switchbacks goalie Moise Pouaty entered the weekend leading the United Soccer League in saves with 45. He stopped all four that were on target Saturday, including one that might have been a bit lucky.
Aly Alberto Hassan had the best chance to equalize for San Antonio, getting a shot off inside the 6-yard box in the 72nd minute during a mad scramble. But the shot hit Pouaty’s legs and died just in front of the goal line.
San Antonio’s Kris Tyrpak hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
“I was able to get a shot off the first pass and the keeper got lucky it bounced between his legs,” Hassan said. “He got away with it. One of those things.”
