State tennis notes: Palmer Ridge notches a program-best fourth in 4A
Palmer Ridge finishes a program-best fourth in Class 4A
Palmer Ridge made history of its own Saturday at the conclusion of the 4A state girls’ tennis tournament. Following three days of action, the Bears found themselves fourth with 31 points, their best finish and most points in program history.
In 2016, Palmer Ridge’s four entries – No. 3 singles and three double squads – combined for 11 points and a ninth-place finish. This time around, the Bears qualified for all seven categories and recorded 27 points alone from its Nos. 2, 3 and 4 doubles teams that all advanced to their respective title matches.
Best of all for the Bears is that only two of the 11 varsity players are seniors, meaning the record for points and place may not last long.
Cheyenne Mountain’s Lossner goes overtime, again
Of the seven singles matches that went to a winner-take-all third set during matches at the state tournament – including playbacks – Cheyenne Mountain found itself in four of them.
And for junior No. 2 singles player Cory Patton Lossner, it seemed like a continuation from the week before.
At the Region 6 tournament May 4-5 at Cheyenne Mountain, Lossner topped Coronado’s Bethany Heitland 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in the semifinal and then won the title by outlasting Joee Crocker of Lewis-Palmer 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
Then on Friday in Pueblo, Lossner ousted Niwot junior Julia Pentz 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinal and went extra time in Saturday’s final, downing Amanda Schlatter of Kent Denver 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 to win the title.
Each match took more than three hours to complete.
“That’s what we talked about in the break between the second and third sets,” Cheyenne Mountain coach Dave Adams said.
“She had been through this before.”
At No. 1 singles, Indians sophomore Morgan Hall won a three-setter in Thursday’s quarterfinals and, after a setback in the semifinals Friday, won a three-set match later that day that put her in Saturday’s third-place contest that she lost.
Discovery Canyon, Air Academy tandems take third
Discovery Canyon’s Hunter Jones and Lizzie McCurdy rebounded nicely from a semifinal loss Friday, winning Saturday’s third-place match 6-4, 6-2 over Jewel Ng and Tehnley White of Niwot. Air Academy’s No. 3 doubles team of Mackie Tate Tygart and Grace Ensor required a longer route to taking third place, having to win two playback matches just to make it to Saturday.
Tygart and Ensor ousted Mullen’s Tatum Maloney and Jordan Cleary in three sets.
Grace Qiu of Rampart dropped a third-place match at No. 3 singles.
5A state tournament
At Gates Tennis Center in Denver: Cherry Creek took home the team title with 61 points, while Mountain Vista took second with 52 points and Ponderosa (42 points) rounded out the top three.
3A state tournament
At Centennial Park in Greeley: D’Evelyn took home the first-ever 3A trophy, outlasting second-place Colorado Academy and Alexander Dawson by three points.
CSCS was the top local team, finishing tied for seventh with 12 points.
Vanguard was close behind, in eighth place, with nine points. Fountain Valley recorded three points.
CSCS was paced by Nicole Pei, who took third place in No. 3 singles with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 win over Lindsey Bovine from Holy Family.
Vanguard got points from six of its seven teams.
