Weekend spring storm prompted multiple postponements in Colorado Springs area

closures

While some activities went on as planned, the weekend snowstorm led organizers of some events to abruptly change their plans. A local high school postponed its prom not once but twice. A Colorado Springs nursery decided to reschedule a 60th anniversary customer appreciation event to June. An elementary/middle school bumped a “red carpet” public premier of a student-created film.

“It’s pretty normal – springtime is our snowiest time of the year,” said meteorologist Emily Roehler, with Gazette news partner KKTV.

This is the second year in a row that Calhan High School moved prom due to inclement weather.

This year, the date for the big event changed two times.

“We’ve always had it the same weekend. At this point we’ll chalk it up to bad luck and certainly look at later dates,” said Principal David Slothower.

The storm blew in Friday night, and Calhan School District RJ-1 officials drove around the area Saturday morning. They determined the roads were too bad, Slothower said.

“What’s most important is everyone attends safely, has a good time and gets home safely,” he said about prom.

This year’s venue, the CreekView Grill at Antler Creek Golf Course in Falcon, was available Sunday night, as were the disc jockey and photographer. Two stores, the Men’s Warehouse and Tuxedo Junction, said they would not charge students late fees to keep rental tuxes another day. So the school announced the prom would be held Sunday night.

High winds swept across the snow-packed eastern plains Sunday morning.

“The wind was projected to continue throughout the day, and we were worried about icy spots,” Slothower said.

So the prom was again rescheduled, this time for Monday night.

Up to 120 attendees were expected, and Slothower said the teens seemed to understand the decision.

“It’s got years and years of tradition and is something students really look forward to, and we want to provide them with that social outlet if at all possible,” he said.

And it was better than the high school gym – which is where last year’s prom was held last year after being postponed because of snow.

Students at the Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning, an elementary and middle charter school in Colorado Springs School District 11, also will wait a little longer for a gala event.

The premier of a film on homelessness – for which students wrote the script, did the cinematography, created sound, made backdrops and features an original musical score by a sixth grader – was supposed to be Saturday but now will be held May 13 at the same place, Kimball’s Peak Three Theater in downtown Colorado Springs.

“This is such an exciting culmination to celebrate and see their work on a big screen – they’ve been working on it five months – and we want them to have a good event with nicer weather,” said Nikki Myers, the school’s director.

The event is free and open to the public and expected to have three seatings, each with 165 attendees, if enough people can re-do their calendars with the new date.

“We want students to be able to walk on the red carpet and enjoy good photos, with parents as paparazzi,” Myers said. “We hope the community can help celebrate their accomplishment.”

Sharon Harding-Shaw’s business, Harding Nursery, on North Powers Boulevard, is weather-driven.

So while it was disappointing to move her 60th anniversary customer appreciation open house from Saturday to June 17, she’s taking the unexpected adjustment in stride.

“We had a few people come out on Saturday and served a few hot dogs but did about 1/30th of the business we thought we’d do,” Harding-Shaw said. “Nobody wants to be out in the cold and the wind.”

Being in the gardening business, though, nobody knows this better: “We get a little too anxious for spring,” she said.

The Pikes Peak region will feel more spring-like this week, with rain forecast for Tuesday and temperatures in the 70s by the weekend, according to KKTV’s Roehler.
