St. Mary’s junior wins 3,200 for first time in more than a year

Hannah McReavy is rounding back into form.

The St. Mary’s junior, who took fourth at the 3A state cross country meet before injuring her Achilles in the offseason, looked surefooted Monday at the El Paso County Small Schools Championships.

With nobody to chase, she beat the field by more than two minutes, crossing in 12 minutes and 15.16 seconds.

This was only the third meet of the season for McReavy and the first time she’d raced a 3,200 in more than a year.

“Knowing what pace to do and having nobody to chase, it was kind of going in there with blind eyes,” she said.

McReavy also added a fourth-place finish in the 800. The senior said she hopes to run the 3,200, 1,600 and 800 at the 3A state meet later this month.

“We needed Hannah to compete,” St. Mary’s coach Archie Malloy said. “I think she’s proved to herself that she’s through this injury phase and has a nice base. You can’t question her heart, ever.”

Peyton’s Kearse rallies 1,600 relay

Kaylee Kearse moved up from third in the last leg of the 1,600 relay to win the event in 4:26.37 .

The Panthers junior also anchored the 3,200 relay to a win in 10:27.61 earlier.

Her focus now is working on foot speed and maintaining a healthy diet with state less than two weeks away.

“I’m definitely going to start eating healthier,” she said. “I’ve been trying to but it’s hard.”

Colorado Springs Christian girls take second

CSCS saw five of its 14 girls on the roster win an individual event, helping the Lions finish second, behind Buena Vista, with 126 points.

Grace Butler won the 100 (13.10), Julia Ridgway won the 800 (2:28.02), Elisabeth Jensen won the 100 hurdles (17.18), Katelyn Sage won the 300 hurdles (47.96) and Lannan Abbott took first in triple jump (33-73/4). CSCS also won the 800 relay in 1:51.72.

“They’re a small team,” Lions coach Mike Caton said, “but they’re a mighty team.”
