Lewis-Palmer diver breaks through as Rangers dominate Pine Creek Invite

Just to think, two weeks ago, Anna Kemper’s best round of dives added up to a score that barely met qualification standards to make the cut for next month’s 5A swim and dive championships.

On Saturday at the Air Force Academy’s Cadet Natatorium, the Lewis-Palmer soph became a school record holder.

“I was completely blown away,” said the Rangers sophomore after her performance at the Eagle Invite. “Last weekend, I broke 400 points for the first time, and I was blessed to have a meet here with 11 solid dives. Getting the record is definitely a surprise.”

Kemper recorded an 11-dive score of 505.20 points, surpassing the 495.80 turned in by then-senior and current Air Force diver Becca Hetrick 11 months ago. She was one of six event champions for Lewis-Palmer as the Rangers racked up 565 points en route to their second Eagle Invite victory in three years.

All the while, Kemper didn’t let the effects from tonsillitis get in her way.

“She’s been sick, so I know she didn’t feel all that great,” Rangers coach Alan Arata said. “She was going at a slower pace, and that was 100 percent better for her diving. She didn’t miss a dive today and kept it steady. It’s all about patience. I told her if she got patient on the board, she’d score 100 more points than she did before. Today, she scored 100 more points.”

Sophomore Meredith Rees took home wins in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, teammate and senior Kaitlyn Griffith added an individual triumph in the 200 individual medley, and the Rangers’ 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams also touched first to pace Lewis-Palmer.

Rees, a state finalist in the 100 and 200 freestyle last February, scored a pair of dominating victories – both meet records – winning the 200 free by more than six seconds and the 100 fly by more than five seconds.

“I’m happy with how I did, and I’m pretty excited to see what happens the rest of the season,” Rees said. “It was exciting to drop time and see everyone swim so well.”

Pine Creek senior Olivia Chatman took home two first-place medals Saturday, but her triumphs came in a complete contrast in style to Rees.

In the 50 freestyle, Chatman edged Lewis-Palmer’s Julie Day by .05 seconds, and claimed another when she touched .11 seconds faster than Griffith to win the 100 backstroke.

“In practice, we do race-pace training, so a lot of it is practice and going to that auto pilot where you know what to do,” Chatman said. “You can’t see anyone in the backstroke, but in the free, I could see the girl to my right and knew it was going to be close. I know I have a longer wingspan, so if I could turn into it, I could get there in time.”

Chatman’s efforts helped Pine Creek to a third-place team finish with 303 points.

Rampart finished second with 412 points, buoyed by individual victories from Allana Clarke (100 free), Catriona Clark (500 free), Edenna Chen (100 breaststroke) and the 400 freestyle relay.
