Cheyenne Mountain captures COS Metro Wrestling championship
Cheyenne Mountain qualified six wrestlers into the finals at the Colorado Springs Metro Championships on Saturday, looking every bit the part of a state contender.
Now comes the tough part: Finishing.
The Indians won their first team title at Metros with a score of 221 despite going 0 for 6 in championship matches. They joined Pine Creek, Widefield, Coronado, Doherty and Discovery Canyon as the only team winners in the tournament’s 17 years.
Now it’s time for the program to make its next leap, Cheyenne Mountain coach Tyler Seaney said.
“We’re still excited,” Seaney said. “It’s the right time of the year to lose some of these close matches and learn from it. We can make these mistakes and fix those mistakes before February.”
Zach Garrard (182) and Zac Baker (160) failed to win their second title at Metros for the Indians, who built a 21-point lead heading into finals at Doherty but couldn’t add to it.
Kevin Hooks (126), Mike McFadden (138), Steven Mattorano (145) and Oliver Neumann (195) also came up just short for a team looking to improve on its third-place finish at 4A state.
“At the end of the day it isn’t February yet,” said Baker, who took defending 5A champ Peter Isais of Pine Creek into overtime before falling 3-1. “We just need to work on perfecting our own individual skills and continue to build a good team bond for the real matches in February.”
Coronado climbed within seven points but settled for second with 214. Steve Dabelko (113) led the comeback charge with a finals win on his fourth consecutive pin, while Jimmy Weaver (182) and KJ Kearns (138) had finals decisions over Cheyenne Mountain.
Discovery Canyon (199), Doherty (197) and Mesa Ridge (172.5) rounded out the top five.
“We knew it was going to be tough to catch them,” Cougars coach Matt Brickell said. “It’s kind of a frustrating deal because we were right there all day. But things happen in a tournament.”
In perhaps the most exciting match of the night, Peyton’s Wyatt Lee beat Pine Creek’s Ronald Salazar III 5-3 in the 152 finals for the school’s first title in the tournament.
In the waning seconds of regulation, Lee flipped Salazar for a two-point takedown to send the match into overtime. He finished it with a walk-off takedown 5 seconds into the extra frame.
“It’s insanely special,” Lee said. “I’m really, really proud. I’m really fortunate and really blessed.”
Discovery Canyon sophomore Patrick Allis (106) won his second consecutive title at Metros, keeping him on pace to join the tournament’s lone four-time winner, Geordan Martinez.
“I didn’t realize there was only one to win it four times until this year,” Allis said. “It definitely gave me more to shoot for.”
Air Academy’s Jason Hanenberg (126) and Pine Creek’s Garrett Niel joined Isais and Dabelko as the other wrestlers to win their second title at the tournament.
