Highlights from Friday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Falcon 45, Sand Creek 43

At Falcon: Behind 14 points from Hanna Diaz and 10 from Kiana Harkema, Falcon (8-2, 3-1 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) snapped a 13-game losing streak to Sand Creek (4-8, 0-4), its longtime District 49 rival.

The Falcons turned the game around in the third quarter, erasing a nine-point halftime deficit with a 17-7 run.

“Before, we didn’t fight back, but now they understand how to do that,” third-year Falcons coach Tarike Adams said. “We had a really sub-par second quarter, and they just came out and played as a team in the second half. It feels really good to finally end up on top against a great program.”

Before Friday, Falcon’s last victory over Sand Creek took place on Dec. 1, 2006.

Air Academy 65, Vista Ridge 61 (OT)

At Vista Ridge: Brooke Sulski scored a team-high 29 points as Air Academy (9-2, 3-0 PPAC) blew a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter but knocked off Vista Ridge (3-7, 1-2) despite a 20-point effort from Darian Taylor.

ECA 51, Peyton 20

At Evangelical Christian Academy: April Mann led all scorers with 20 points, helping Pikes Peak 3A and Below No. 3 ECA (7-0, 1-0 2A Black Forest) to a blowout of Peyton (6-2, 0-2).

ECA set the tone with a 21-7 run to start the game.

Salida 47, Vanguard 15

At Salida: The Vanguard School (0-7, 0-3 3A Tri-Peaks) found itself down 15-2 after the first quarter and never recovered in a road loss to the Spartans (4-5, 2-1).

Lewis-Palmer 61, Cheyenne Mountain 42

At Cheyenne Mountain: Preslee Enget scored a game-high 16 points as Lewis-Palmer (7-4, 2-2 4A/5A Pikes Peak) broke a two-game losing streak and matched its win total from last season.

Arianna Blowe had 12 points, while Sami Tucker added 11 for the Rangers, who broke the game open in the second half after leading just 27-21 at halftime.

Discovery Canyon 49, Palmer Ridge 33

At Discovery Canyon: Emma List scored 11 points, Ashten Prechtel added eight point and eight rebounds, and Discovery Canyon (7-6, 3-1 4A/5A Pikes Peak) beat Palmer Ridge (8-5, 2-2) for the first time in school history, ending a 15-game losing streak in the series dating back to 2009.

The Thunder took control of the game with a dominant fourth quarter, outscoring the Bears 19-8.

Mesa Ridge 67, Harrison 27

At Harrison: Ashley Bowen led all scorers with 19 points, and Chloe Welsh added 12 as Mesa Ridge (7-2, 3-0 4A CSML) overpowered Harrison (0-9, 0-3).

Of Mesa Ridge’s 26 field goals, 21 were assisted, including 10 alone from freshman Monet Hubbard.

CSCS 79, James Irwin 12

At James Irwin: Megan Engesser poured in 21 points, Rachel Ingram added 17, and Pikes Peak 3A and Below No. 2 CSCS (7-1, 2-0 3A Tri-Peaks) allowed only four field goals in a rout of James Irwin (1-2, 0-1).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Vista Ridge 60, Air Academy 33

At Air Academy: Hunter Maldonado had 26 points and seven steals to propel Pikes Peak 5A No. 3 Vista Ridge (9-4, 3-0 PPAC) to its fifth straight victory while sending Air Academy (1-12, 0-4) to its ninth consecutive setback.

Sand Creek 106, Falcon 66

At Sand Creek: Pikes Peak 4A No. 1 Sand Creek (12-1, 4-0 PPAC) ran its winning streak to seven games and scored the most points in more than a decade in a rout of Falcon (3-7, 0-5).

D’shawn Schwartz led all scorers with 39 points to lead Sand Creek. Jeffrey Gary added 20.

The Scorpions scored 99 points in the season’s first two games, convincing wins over Thornton and Pueblo Centennial, but had not reached triple digits since before the 2005-06 season.

Mesa Ridge 84, Harrison 61

At Mesa Ridge: Dylan Mileto led four scorers in double figures with 22 points as Mesa Ridge (7-3, 3-0 4A Colorado Springs Metro League) won its sixth in a row with a wire-to-wire win over Harrison (5-6, 1-3).

Deven Nelson (18 points), Caleb Stewart (17) and Dalen Jackson (11) also contributed to the Grizzlies’ cause.

The Panthers were led by Orlando Westbrook, who poured in 22 points. Quinzel Harding added 21, while Eric Montgomery chipped in with 14.

Lewis-Palmer 72, Cheyenne Mountain 45

At Cheyenne Mountain: Angelo Battistelli scored 19 points, Billy Cook added 14, and Lewis-Palmer (6-4, 2-2 PPAC) built up a 19-point halftime cushion and cruised past Cheyenne Mountain (6-6, 2-2).

Eli Burkett added 13 points for the Rangers.

Will Louis led the Indians with 13 points.

Discovery Canyon 58, Palmer Ridge 53

At Discovery Canyon: Josh Umiamaka scored a team-high 13 points, and Zach Anderson and Britt Logan chipped in with 10 each as Discovery Canyon (5-7, 2-2 PPAC) surpassed its win total from last season by holding off Palmer Ridge (8-5, 2-2).

CSCS 81, James Irwin 34

At James Irwin: Justin Engesser’s 22 points paced five scorers in double figures as Pikes Peak 3A and Below No. 1 CSCS (8-1, 3-0 3A Tri-Peaks) jumped out to a big lead early and eased past James Irwin (1-3, 0-2).

Jared Burbidge added 16 points for the Lions, who also got 14 points from Noah Hopkins and 10 each from Jordan Greager and Zach Wismer.

ICE HOCKEY

Lewis-Palmer 3, Pueblo County 0

At Colorado Sports Center: Christian Perry scored two goals and added an assist, and Noah Vanderbeck stopped all 22 shots that came his way as Pikes Peak No. 2 Lewis-Palmer (2-6) blanked Pueblo County for the Rangers’ second straight win after an 0-6 start.

Heritage 5, Doherty 3

At Sertich: Anthony Hervias scored twice and added an assist, but Doherty (0-8, 0-4 Peak Conference) allowed three unanswered goals in the third period as Heritage (6-3, 4-1) rallied for the road victory.

It was a far different game than the previous meeting six days earlier when the Eagles routed the Spartans, 9-1.

Doherty led 1-0 after one period on Hervias’ first goal, assisted by Cullen Moehring and Riley Dunlop, with 2:36 left in the first period.

Heritage scored twice in the second period for a 2-1 advantage, but Doherty reclaimed the lead in the third period on a power-play goal from Hervias and the tie-breaking goal from Scott Sellers that gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead with 12:15 left in regulation.

The Eagles responded with three goals in a span of 4:56 to seize control.

Resurrection Christian 4, Cheyenne Mountain 1

At Honnen: Ryan McCann’s 47 saves weren’t enough as Pikes Peak No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain (6-3, 3-3 Peak Conference) lost both ends of a home-and-home against Resurrection Christian (4-3, 4-0).

The Cougars beat the Indians 3-0 on Jan. 7.

Despite being outshot 51-15, Cheyenne Mountain kept it close. Dakota Henn’s goal from Shawn Herlihy tied the game at 1 just 50 seconds into the second period, but the Indians couldn’t muster many scoring opportunities after that.

Liberty 7, Summit 3

At Breckenridge: Chase Johnson and Jonah Dixon each had two goals as Liberty (5-5, 3-3 Pinnacle Conference) built a six-goal lead and cruised past Summit (0-4-1, 0-2-1).

Johnson and Dixon scored first-period goals for the Lancers, who added three more in the second period for a 5-0 advantage.

Aspen 6, Pine Creek 0

At Lewis Ice Arena: Aspen put the game away with a four-goal third period as the Skiers (2-5-1, 2-1-1 Peak Conference) sent Pine Creek (2-7-1, 0-5) to its fifth straight loss.

Steamboat Springs 6, Air Academy 2

At Howelsen: Ethan Kalbfleisch scored early for Air Academy (2-5, 1-3 Pinnacle), but it was all Steamboat Springs after that as Peter Wharton had three goals and two assists for the Sailors, who also got four assists from Grant McNamara.

Kalbfleisch’s even-strength goal gave the Kadets a 1-0 lead at the 6:52 mark of the first period.

Steamboat scored the next five goals and led 6-1 at the second intermission.

Gavin Gray ended the Steamboat run, scoring off assists from Aaron Ortiz and Nick Chiacchia to cut the deficit to 5-2 with 13:23 left in the second period.

WRESTLING

Mel Smith Husky Invite

At Florence: Cheyenne Mountain and Canon City went 1-2 in the team standings after early rounds, sending eight and six wrestlers, respectively, into Saturday’s semifinals.

Cheyenne Mountain scored 60 points, while Canon City accumulated 54.
