Breakdown: Rampart won all three games in its home-based tournament, including a rare day-night doubleheader Saturday, thanks to inclement weather earlier in the week. The Rams, winners of four in a row, play league foes Fountain-Fort Carson (Tuesday) and Pine Creek (Saturday) this week. Doherty opened defense of its 5A Metro League crown with a win over Coronado on Saturday and meets Pine Creek and longtime District 11 rival Palmer on Tuesday and Friday, respectively. . While it’s no surprise that Sand Creek and Sierra opened 2-0 in their respective leagues, the same perhaps wasn’t expected from Cheyenne Mountain. The Indians have won four straight but face quite a formidable stretch of games with Vista Ridge, Lewis-Palmer, Sand Creek and Rampart all coming in a 10-day period starting Tuesday. . CSCS fell from the ranks of the undefeated with a loss at 5A Rampart on Friday. Manitou Springs travels to Peyton on Saturday in a battle of the area’s top 3A and 2A squads, respectively.

Breakdown: Both Pine Creek and Doherty fell to top competition last week heading into their league showdown Tuesday at Doherty. Pine Creek, which lost to Horizon on Friday, has a seven-game winning streak against Doherty. The Spartans saw their season-opening, eight-game run end in an overtime loss at Pueblo South on Jan. 3. Liberty enters the poll on the strength of a five-game winning streak. The Lancers hope to reverse recent history against Palmer and Rampart this week. Liberty split with Palmer last season but has won only two of the past 16 meetings, while the Rams have taken down their D20 rivals the past nine times and 15 of 17 overall. . Air Academy has won seven games in a row, its longest winning streak since ending the 2011-12 season with 18 en route to the 4A state crown. Next up for the Kadets is Palmer Ridge, which has won five straight and ended Falcon’s six-game winning streak Friday. . St. Mary’s continued its hot start with Tri-Peaks League wins over Lamar and Trinidad last week. The Pirates go out of league with a Tuesday road game at undefeated Pueblo East (7-0) but finish the week with a much more familiar opponent in longtime rival Manitou Springs on Friday. Evangelical Christian Academy, which makes its season debut in the poll, meets 6-1 Peyton in a key Black Forest League game Friday. Peyton had its six-game winning streak ended by Simla on Saturday.

 

ICE HOCKEY

Breakdown: Cheyenne Mountain hosts its end of a home-and-home against Resurrection Christian on Friday at Colorado College. Last Saturday, the Indians suffered a 3-0 loss on the Cougars’ home ice. Cheyenne Mountain also has a home game against Battle Mountain on Saturday. Lewis-Palmer finally plays opponents from outside the ultra-tough Foothills League with home encounters with Pine Creek on Tuesday and Pueblo County on Friday.
