2 Colorado ballot measures spark fight over independents’ growing influence

Colorado’s top Democrat and Republican don’t often agree, but this election Rick Palacio and Steve House are united in opposition to a pair of ballot proposals that would give more power to independent voters.

The two measures, listed as Proposition 107 and Proposition 108, are designed to give independents a greater voice in party primaries — an idea that has drawn criticism from Palacio, the state Democratic Party leader, and House, his GOP counterpart, who see the proposals as an existential threat.

Proposition 107 would force Colorado to hold a presidential primary — something the state hasn’t done since 2000 — and require that independent voters get a chance to vote in it.
