Tuesday’s prep roundup: Discovery Canyon claims PPAC boys’ tennis title after beating Cheyenne Mountain
Highlights from Tuesday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Discovery Canyon 5, Cheyenne Mountain 2
At Discovery Canyon: Discovery Canyon beat Cheyenne Mountain for the second consecutive season behind the strength of its singles play to claim the Class 4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference title.
No. 1 singles Nick Lorenz swept his match, while No. 2 Dustin Bohuslavschi and No. 3 Tanner Jones won in three for the Thunder.
Discovery Canyon also won the Nos. 3 and 4 doubles matches in straight sets.
The victory garnered the Thunder the PPAC title, Indians athletic director Kris Roberts confirmed.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Widefield 4, Sierra 1
At Widefield: Kody Scholl scored twice and Justin Clemens had a goal and assist to lead Widefield (2-6, 1-1 4A Colorado Springs Metro League) past Sierra (3-6, 0-2).
George Arciniega also scored for the Gladiators, who led 2-1 at the half.
Sierra was not without its chances, as Travis Rader made 16 saves for Widefield.
Cheyenne Mountain 4, Vista Ridge 0
At Cheyenne Mountain: For the first time this season, 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain (8-1, 1-0 5A/4A Pikes Peak Athletic Conference) had a 3-0 lead.
The Indians made sure to protect it, even while playing down a man for a bit against Vista Ridge (5-4, 0-1)
“We stressed to the guys about getting off on the right foot,” Indians coach Tomas Martinez said. “We haven’t had a 3-0 lead all year this year. To knock the ball around the way we did and be patient, it was a good starting point for league play.”
Luke White had a goal and two assists and Sam Kilimann netted the Indians’ first two goals. Will Thompson made 10 saves in 65 minutes of play.
Fountain Valley 4, Dolores Huerta 1
At Dolores Huerta: Four players scored for 3A No. 2 Fountain Valley (5-2-1, 2-0 3A Tri-Peaks 1) and the Danes beat Dolores Huerta (0-4, 0-2) to remain unbeaten in league.
Fountain Valley found itself tied at 1 at the break before finishing the game with three goals in the second half.
Galen Kelly, Garrett Pattee, Frank Oliveri-Barton and William Graney scored for the Danes.
CSCS 10, CSS 0
At Colorado Springs School: Pikes Peak region 3A No. 1 Colorado Springs Christian School (5-2, 2-0 3A Tri-Peaks 2) scored six in the first half before ending the game early with four goals in the second half against CSS (0-8, 0-2).
Manitou Springs 6, ECA 0
At ECA: Freshman Cullen Cote and junior Jon Gerdes each scored twice to lead Manitou Springs (6-4, 1-1 3A Tri-Peaks 2) past Evangelical Christian Academy (2-7, 0-2).
Cote and Gerdes each added an assist. Ted Weiss had a goal and two assists.
Pine Creek 5, Rampart 1
At District 20 Stadium: 5A No. 2 Pine Creek (5-5, 1-0 5A CSML) scored three times in the first 30 minutes to put the game out of reach early against Rampart (1-7-2, 0-1).
Christian Seaquist scored twice and Jon Schroeder, Landon Platt and Andrew Turk also tallied for the Eagles.
Lewis-Palmer 7, Falcon 0
At Falcon: Lewis-Palmer (8-1, 1-0 4A PPAC) made it eight consecutive victories, shutting out Falcon (1-7, 0-1).
The Rangers will put that streak on the line Thursday when they take on Cheyenne Mountain.
VOLLEYBALL
Lewis-Palmer 3, Pine Creek 0
At Pine Creek: Pikes Peak region 4A No. 1 Lewis-Palmer (12-0) swept 5A No. 1 Pine Creek (7-5) 25-20, 25-22, 25-19.
Michaela Putnicki led the Rangers with 14 kills and Lydia Bartalo added 12 and a team-high 15 digs.
Cheyenne Mountain 3, Vista Ridge 0
At Cheyenne Mountain: Defending 4A champion and 4A No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain (7-3, 5A/4A PPAC 1-0) held Vista Ridge (11-6, 0-1) to seven points in the first set before cruising in the league match 25-7, 25-21, 25-13.
Casey Ahrendsen led the Indians with 12 kills, while Grace Wilder added nine.
The Indians have won six consecutive matches.
SOFTBALL
Liberty 15, Fountain-Fort Carson 8
At Fountain-Fort Carson: Pikes Peak 5A No. 2 Liberty (9-6, 7-1 5A Colorado Springs Metro League) avenged a loss to Fountain-Fort Carson (10-7, 7-3) with a win Tuesday to put Liberty firmly in the lead for the league title.
A day after completing a sweep of Pine Creek to move into sole possession of first place, the Lancers scored 15 runs to put F-FC two games back of the Lancers.
Rampart 15, Coronado 0, 4 innings
At Rampart: Rampart (8-7, 6-3 5A CSML) scored 11 runs in the first inning and cruised to the four-inning win over Coronado (1-13, 0-9).
Olivia Risch and Kate Frederick each drove in four runs, with Frederick doubling and tripling. Alex Hill homered and drove in three. The three players combined to score eight of the 15 runs.
Shelby Shepherd struck out six in four innings, holding the Cougars to two hits and two walks.
