It wasn’t quite the same as his name up in lights, but Arik Roberts definitely got a kick of seeing his name carried around on a scoreboard during the second round of the Class 5A boys’ golf state tournament.

Roberts did his name, and his school’s name, proud by shooting an even-par 71 at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction on Tuesday to finish 2-over-par and tied for sixth in the two-day tournament.

“One of my goals was to be in the last groups to get people to watch you and represent my school in a positive way,” Roberts said via phone on his way home from the tournament.

Following Monday’s 2-over round, Roberts teed off in the third to the final group Tuesday. That meant his name and his playing partners’ names, were on a portable scoreboard toted along with them.

“I was pretty excited,” Roberts said. “A couple kids carry around a stake with your score on it. It was a pretty professional thing like you see on the PGA.”

Knowing this would be his final round of high school golf, Roberts spent the offseason practicing harder than he had at any point before. He couldn’t remember the last time he took a day off.

The practice led to confidence and confidence led to a round of six bogeys, six pars and six birdies.

He didn’t get flustered when his ball ended up in a stake hole Monday. On Tuesday, on the 12th hole his ball bounced into a tree and dived downward, ending up between the stump and a root. He had to take a drop – and a one-stroke penalty – and settled for bogey.

He went par, birdie, par on the next three holes, shooting 2-under through 15. He gave back a stroke on two of the last three holes.

But his ability to remain calm despite a couple of bad breaks impressed his coach most.

“I was just so proud of him,” Steve Vargas said. “Again he had a couple bad breaks on bogey holes. … You see other guys lose their cool. He was steady as a rock, doesn’t affect him.”

Doherty’s Andrew Stroh finished in 23rd at 10-over, following a 75 Tuesday. Coronado’s Luke Travins tied for 29th and Rampart’s Cameron Como, who entered the day tied for 13th, finished tied for 37th.

Highlands Ranch’s Kyle Pearson ran away with the title, finishing at 9-under after shooting 4-under Tuesday.

Regis Jesuit held on to beat Highlands Ranch for the team title by one stroke. The Raiders finished at 10-over, shooting 436.
