Palmer’s Arik Roberts tied for 7th, Rampart’s Cameron Como 13th at 5A state golf

Nearing the end of his first round at the Class 5A boys’ golf state tournament, Arik Roberts found himself in some deep trouble. Literally.

Roberts’ tee shot on the par 3 dropped into a hole that had held a hazard stake, which errantly wasn’t replaced.

Roberts hit out close enough, and two-putted from off the green for bogey.

The Palmer senior finished with a 2-over-par 73 at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction on Monday, good enough to be tied for seventh heading into Tuesday’s final round.

“He stepped up and played really well,” Palmer coach Steve Vargas said.

“He was really calm, really looking forward to today.”

Rampart junior Cameron Como, playing in his first state tournament, showed no nerves.

The fifth-place finisher in the 5A Colorado Springs Metro League was one stroke behind Roberts at 3-over, tied for 13th.

“It was a great round for him,” Rampart coach Scott Blatnick said. “He probably would’ve had a better round if he hit some greens. His putting was amazing.”

Como had six bogeys and three birdies to shoot 74.

“When we were walking the first hole together, he was real excited to be there, his first time at state,” Blatnick said. “He said he just wanted to enjoy the moment, have fun.”

Rock Canyon’s Nick Caldwell is in the lead heading to the second round after shooting 6-under. Caldwell’s Jaguars are two strokes back of Regis Jesuit (220) in the team title race.

Roberts’ bogey on hole No. 5 (he started on No. 10) was one of two bogeys over his last five holes. Otherwise, Roberts, the CSML individual champion, was looking at par.

“Just for him to come back from two bad breaks shows he was focused today, in the zone,” Vargas said.

“Just unlucky. To overcome that in that environment was great.”

Heading into the tournament, Roberts was aiming for a top-10 finish, Vargas said. It’s in reach.

“He was smiling ear to ear because he played well,” Vargas said.

“Just a few bad breaks he overcame.”
