Luke Trujillo’s 5-under 67 leads Discovery Canyon to first place at 4A state boys’ golf

CARBONDALE – Say birdie four times, then say eagle. Those were Luke Trujillo’s first five holes in a phenomenal start to the Class 4A boys state golf tournament Monday.

And while the Discovery Canyon junior couldn’t sustain that hot start, he kept going strong aside from two hiccups at the end and finished the day with a 5-under-par 67, making him the leader by three strokes over Windsor’s Cole Krantz going into Tuesday’s final round.

Trujillo’s great round, coupled with a 1-under 71 from senior Owen Pasvogel and a 74 from junior Caleb Blackburn at River Valley Ranch Golf Club, gave the Thunder the team lead. Its 4-under 212 is 13 strokes ahead of second-place Montrose, followed by Evergreen with 231 strokes and three-time defending champion Valor Christian with 232.

Trujillo had a start unlike any he has ever had, and he matched his best score ever.

But instead of wearing a wide smile afterward, his head was down as he lamented a double bogey on No. 17 and a bogey on 18, his only two holes above par.

“If anyone says you can’t be mad with a 67, I guess I can,” he said. “If you’d told me I’d shoot 67 today, I didn’t care how. But I do care. Honestly, it’s tough.”

Before the rough ending, Trujillo was torching the course. His eagle on No. 5 was followed by five straight pars. Then, he got a second eagle, holing out of a bunker on No. 11 to get to 8-under, followed by five more pars.

Thunder coach Mark Liggett said Trujillo shouldn’t be so hard on himself.

“He shot 5-under today, dude. Way to go,” he said.

Liggett said the key to Tuesday’s final round and winning the state title is tempo.

“Keep your tempo, solid ball striking, don’t do anything different. Pretty much just trust your swing,” he said.

Pasvogel said he’ll try to repeat what he did Monday.

“You’ve got to find a way to stay calm, and for me it was one shot at a time, and I know I’m a good golfer. . Keep the ball in play. Hit greens.”

Air Academy senior Reice Henricks carded a 71, tied for third place, one stroke out of second. He was 2-under through 13 holes, but he needed a birdie on No. 9, his 18th hole, to offset two bogeys in the previous four holes.

Henricks said of those bogeys, “I started to get perfectionist-like,” but, “It was nice to finish with the birdie.”

Henricks said his goal was simply shooting better than the 25-over par he shot last year at state.

“All I’m really looking for (Tuesday) is enjoying it and have fun,” he said.
