Saturday’s prep roundup: Cheyenne Mountain shuts out Lincoln

FOOTBALL

Cheyenne Mountain 27, Lincoln 0

At Lincoln: After losing to Widefield by three points a week ago, the Indians (3-1) bounced back in a big way on Saturday and blanked the Lancers (2-1) for their third victory of the season, which is one more win than Cheyenne Mountain had all of last season.

The three wins are the most that the Indians have had in a single season since 2012 when they won seven games. Cheyenne Mountain will face Mitchell (2-2) on Thursday at Garry Berry Stadium.

Liberty 14, Air Academy 7

At Liberty: The Kadets (1-3) opened up the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run from Dylan Ecker in the first quarter, but Air Academy couldn’t find a way to score again.

Liberty’s first score came in the second quarter after a 57-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Halverson to Jake Felton, and the score was tied at seven after the first half. The Lancers (2-3) scored for the final time in the third quarter after Halverson ran it in from one yard out.

CROSS COUNTRY

Fountain-Fort Carson Invitational

At Fountain-Fort Carson: Two runners from Discovery Canyon finished in the top four in the girls’ varsity race to help the Thunder win the invitational. Sophomore Liberty Ricca finished in 20 minutes, 39 seconds behind Kiara Mattern of James Irwin who won the race in 20:20. Discovery Canyon’s Camile Tredoux placed fourth (21:56).

On the boys’ side, Matthew Schramm of Fountain-Fort Carson won the varsity race with a time of 17:39, while four Discovery Canyon runners finished in the top five.

Pueblo Central Invitational

At Elmwood Golf Course: The Classical Academy senior Tanner Norman, who was the Gazette’s boys’ cross country Peak Performer of the Year last season after winning the state title, won the race on Saturday in 15:42. The closest finisher to Norman was Alamosa’s Isaiah De La Cerda at 16:04. Widefield’s Max Martinez placed third (16:06).

Rampart’s Mathilde Bernard won the girls’ varsity race in 19:30 and TCA’s Katie Flaherty finished third (19:58).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Fountain Valley 2, Colorado Academy 2

At Fountain Valley: The Danes (4-2-1) and Mustangs (4-2-1) settled with a draw after two overtime periods in which neither team could score. Colorado Academy scored goals in each half, while Pikes Peak region 3A No. 2 Fountain Valley scored twice in the second with goals from Ian Strine and LaeOne Jung.

Freshman goaltender Jackson Blaylock finished with three saves and played the entire game for the Danes. Max Jack had eight saves for the Mustangs in regulation, while Noah Rhodes finished with four saves in overtime.

Canon City 2, Pueblo County 1

At Pueblo County: Gonzalo Garcia-Camacho scored both goals for the Tigers and Jacob Ahrenholtz assisted on one as Canon City improved to 4-4.

Stats were not available for Pueblo County.

Rampart 2, ThunderRidge 0

At District 20 Stadium: Rampart (1-6-2) won its first game of the season after scoring twice in the first half to blank ThunderRidge (4-5). The Rams will face Pine Creek on Tuesday at D20.

Manitou Springs 3, Falcon 2

At Manitou: Jon Gerdes, Alliah Halcomb and Riley Jungbauer all scored goals for the Mustangs and Cullen Cote, Ted Weiss and Asher Schoepflin all had assists. Freshman goaltender Zach Talbot had eight saves as the Mustangs improved to 5-4. Falcon fell to 1-6.

Stats for Falcon were not available.

SOFTBALL

Cheyenne Mountain 11, Doherty 6

At Doherty: Cheyenne Mountain (6-6) scored five runs in the first inning and led 8-1 after two, and the Spartans (4-12) could never catch up. Michelle Vereline and Hope Brazil each finished with two RBIs for the Indians, and Brazil earned the win in the circle after pitching all seven innings and striking out four batters.

Stats for Doherty were not available.

St. Mary’s 7, La Junta 3

At St. Mary’s: The Pirates (7-9, 3-6 3A District 2) scored five times in the first inning, which was more than enough to defeat the Tigers (7-8, 5-4). Natalie Godec and Maddie Horsley led the Pirates with two RBIs each. Peyton Richter struck out six and earned the win.

Stats for La Junta were not available.

Discovery Canyon 8, Pueblo South 6

At Discovery Canyon: the Hornets (5-7-1) finished with 13 hits to Discovery Canyon’s 8 and scored three runs in the seventh, but the effort wasn’t enough to overcome the Pikes Peak region 4A/3A No.1 Thunder (10-5).

Madison McCoy and Maddie Dewey each had two RBIs for the Thunder while Cora Ferguson and Gabbi Rathmann each added one.

Stats for Pueblo South were not available.

D’Evelyn 7, Falcon 0

At D’Evelyn: The Falcons lost their second straight game and fell to 8-8. D’Evelyn improved to 9-5.

VOLLEYBALL

Peyton 3, Elbert 0

At Elbert: Nicole Chiddix led Peyton (2-8) with four kills and Skylar Botos and Emily Starkie each had three as the Panthers won their second consecutive match after starting the season 0-8. Emily Pranger led all players with eight kills for the Bulldogs

(7-5) and teammate Morgan Phillips had five.

Cheyenne Mountain 3, Ponderosa 0

At Ponderosa: The Pikes Peak region 4A No. 2 Indians won three close sets against the Mustangs and improved to 6-3. The Mustangs fell to 3-8.

FIELD HOCKEY

Palmer Ridge 1, Colorado Academy 0

At Don Breese Stadium: The Bears’ lone goal came from Shannon Snediker in the first half, and goaltender Keelin Broeker finished with four saves as the Bears (7-0-1) blanked the Mustangs (7-1-1).
