Pikes Pub: Great Storm celebrates Oktoberfest, Ivywild marks a century

Craft beer may not be flowing at Oktoberfest in Munich, where the German beer purity law known as The Reinheitsgebot limits beer ingredients to hops, malted barley, water and yeast, but that hasn’t stopped fans and makers of creative New World beers from celebrating the planet’s largest beer and fun fest from afar.

Great Storm Brewing raises a glass to Oktoberfest with a Saturday celebration and two seasonal releases: Red Oktober, a Russian-titled mashup of Irish and German beer styles, and Gdansk Gdansk Revolution, a Baltic porter spiced with bay leaves. Stick around the party ‘til 9 p.m. for the outcome of a free drawing for two tickets to the upcoming – and super sold-out – Great American Beer Festival, Oct. 6-8 in Denver. Visit greatstormbrewing.com for more info.

Speaking of history and beer, Ivywild School marks its 100th birthday with a Saturday yard party hosted by its biggest commercial resident and the Spring’s largest brewer, Bristol Brewing Co. The celebration at the former elementary school and current mixed-use development runs noon to 8 p.m. and includes the release of a specially-brewed beer, two free circus performances by the Millibo Art Theater and the grand opening of Axe and the Oak Distillery’s new Ivywild tasting room, the Whiskey House. Visit ivywildschool.com.

For beer fans who want to celebrate in more traditional, Bavarian style, there’s still time to purchase tickets to Colorado Springs OktoberFest, Sept. 23-25 at Security Service Field. Go to csoktoberfest.com.
