Quick hits: A look at fantasy football this weekend
Stephen Brashear
Things to watch this week:
Thursday
N.Y. Jets vs Buffalo – Despite the national narrative that Darrelle Revis can’t play anymore, the New York defense is for real. It is a strong play this week.
Sunday
Dallas vs Washington – Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott had an underwhelming debut. That should change this week against a Washington defense that allowed 4.9 yards per carry on Monday night.
Kansas City vs Houston – I am not afraid of Chiefs QB Alex Smith in fantasy. If he would take more risks and not play so conservatively he could easily be a top 10 fantasy QB.
Cincinnati vs Pittsburgh – The Bengals are likely going to need to score points to stay with the Steelers. WR Brandon LaFell is someone who might be available on your waiver wire who could help your team.
San Francisco vs Carolina – If you have Carlos Hyde – try and deal him. Despite his two touchdowns he only averaged 3.8 yards per carry.
Baltimore vs Cleveland – If you have roster space, Kenneth Dixon is the running back you want from these teams. He won’t play this week – but by the end of the month he should be the Ravens’ featured back.
Tennessee vs Detroit – Titans WR Rishard Matthews was a disappointment in Week 1. Andre Johnson could be a threat for targets.
Miami vs New England – Patriots rookie WR Malcom Mitchell is a player to monitor. He suffered an elbow injury in preseason, but seems to be getting back to speed.
New Orleans vs NY Giants – Nobody seemed to want to draft Rashad Jennings in the preseason. He is the clear No. 1 back in New York and there doesn’t appear to be much competition. You might want to trade for him.
Tampa Bay vs Arizona – I don’t understand how Cardinals RB David Johnson only had 16 carries against the Patriots last week. I expect his output to increase.
Seattle vs Los Angeles – Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin had eight receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown on Dec. 27 against the Rams. No reason to think he will slow down.
Jacksonville vs San Diego – Trying to figure out who is going to emerge as the Chargers’ top receiver is going to be tricky. Tyrell Williams led the team with 71 yards last week, but he amassed those yards on two receptions. I’m banking on Travis Benjamin becoming the team’s top WR.
Atlanta vs Oakland – I really hope you picked up The Gazette’s Broncos preview magazine. In it, we advised you to avoid Falcons RB Devonta Freeman. We stand by that advice.
Indianapolis vs Denver – Obviously it’s too short of a sample size to make grand assumptions, but if you don’t think Broncos RB C.J. Anderson is going to have a monster season, you aren’t paying attention.
Green Bay vs Minnesota – Vikings RB Adrian Peterson struggled last week against the Titans. Some owners are looking to move on from AP. I am not one of those owners. He scored in each contest against the Packers last season.
Philadelphia vs Chicago – As long as the Bears are banged up in the secondary, using receivers against them are a smart fantasy play. I’m interested to see how Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor do on the road with a rookie QB.
