Tuesday’s prep roundup: Woodland Park wins 4A Metro boys’ golf
BOYS’ GOLF
Panther Invitational
At Shining Mountain Golf Club: Woodland Park wrapped up the 4A Colorado Springs Metro League title Tuesday with a win in the Panthers’ host tournament. Woodland Park senior Sam Levy, who placed second at the invite, claimed the individual league title after holding onto a two-stroke lead over TCA freshman Liam O’Halloran, who won the individual title at the invite. TCA finished second in the team standings on Tuesday. “Sam didn’t have his best game, honestly, but he hung in there,” Panthers coach Brian Gustafson said. “Liam played really well and shot 77. Sam was a little disappointed in his round of 80, but it was still good enough to hold onto (the league title).” The Panthers, who had not won an invite in the program’s 17-year history, won three consecutive tournaments this year. Before Tuesday’s tournament, Woodland Park won the Mitchell Invitational and the Gladiator Invitational.Gustafson said he was really proud of his team and called the players “trailblazers” in regards to what they have accomplished for Woodland Park golf.“They have come a long way,” he said. “Hats off to them for achieving the goals they set.”One of the Panthers’ goals this season was to win league.“When we set goals, I try to guide the guys; (the goals) need to be measurable, attainable and challenging,” Gustafson said. “They felt they were close enough last year that (winning the league title) was attainable this year but knew that it would be challenging.”Now, the Panthers set their sights on regional play which begins Sept. 19.“Now it’s kind of a reset,” Gustafson said. “It’s another season, so to speak, and they have goals for trying to get to state, as well.”
