Redford, Fonda make waves on the west side during first day of ‘Our Souls at Night’ filming
Fans hungry for a Robert Redford or Jane Fonda sighting were satiated Monday – the first day of filming in Colorado Springs for the Netflix movie “Our Souls at Night.”
Looky-loos planted themselves across the street from the west side home where crews were filming and were well-rewarded. The man of the hour, Redford himself, strolled in and out of the house throughout the morning, clad in an untucked blue plaid, long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans. About 11:30 a.m. he walked down the sidewalk with a crew member, hopped in a white car and sped off, much to the dismay of lookers-on.
About 30 minutes earlier, Fonda exited the house that will be used as the home of Redford’s character in the film and crossed the street to meet waiting fans. She signed autographs and made chitchat but postponed taking photos with folks, telling them to come back in the afternoon after she’d had her makeup done.
“I told her I liked all her movies through the years, and she still looks great,” said Darryl Brown, who spent about an hour watching the activity. “I told her I appreciated her coming across the street. Many people wouldn’t do that. She was a pleasant lady.”
The convivial atmosphere was rife with strangers comparing notes and new arrivals asking for the latest gossip. A small group of ever-changing folks stood or rested in their lawn chairs while neighbors gathered on nearby porches. Pairs of bicyclists rode up, plopped down on the sidewalk in the midday heat and took up watch. One motorcyclist slowly weaved back and forth on the street while holding out a cellphone to take video. Half a block down, a couple of small tents were pitched across the street from another west side home, the setting for Fonda’s character in the film.
Only the sidewalk in front of the house was blocked off, and police cars periodically closed off the street during filming. Production staff milled up and down in front of the house and lingered at the craft services table with its beverages and snacks.
“I’ll probably come back later,” Brown said as the clock ticked toward noon.
Crew members said the production would continue to film for the next week and a half in the west-side spot. Other shooting locations include Eleven Mile State Park in Lake George and several spots in Florence, including the “Remember When” parade during the 89th annual Florence Pioneer Days. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. Filming is expected to continue through early November.
The movie is based on the novel by the late Colorado author Kent Haruf about a widow and widower in a small Colorado town who steal off to each other’s houses in the middle of the night for companionship that eventually turns romantic. The film is set for release next year on the online streaming media and video service.
