Skyline 30, Coronado 28

At Skyline: Toby Smith used his arm to keep Coronado (0-2) close, but Skyline (2-0) held on.

The Cougars cut the lead to 30-28 when Toby Smith threw a 55-yard touchdown to Raiden Mares with 3:05 left in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons recovered the ensuing onside kick, however, and ran out the clock.

Earlier, Coronado took a 21-17 lead late in the third quarter on a 4-yard toss from Smith to Justin Dwinell. Skyline scored 13 unanswered points to pull ahead 30-21.

Pomona 42, Fountain-Fort Carson 0

At Pomona: The Pikes Peak region 5A No. 2 team has scored just six points in their first two games under new coach Jake Novotny.

Fountain-Fort Carson (0-2) will look to get back on track when it hosts Pine Creek Friday.

St. Vrain Invitational

At Lyons: Hannah McReavy won the 2A-3A girls’ division in 19 minutes and 13 seconds for St. Mary’s, which took fifth.

McReavy, who took fourth at the 3A state meet a year ago, led throughout and beat the field convincingly.

One reason may have been the fact she didn’t have the chance race some of the other top 3A talent after a handful of elite 2A and 3A runners moved up to the 4A-5A division.

St. Mary’s coach Deb Hellman said McReavy plans to run up a division in her next two meets.

“If I have an idea of a time I want her to run and she agrees – give her some competition and she’ll do even better,” Hellman said.

The boys’ 4A-5A race, meanwhile, came down to an all-out sprint in the final meters.

Monarch’s Isaac Green, the returning 5A champ, edged Air Academy’s Ethan Powell by less than a second in 15:49. Widefield’s Max Martinez took third in 15:50 and Monarch’s Charlie Perry was fourth in 15:51.

“Ethan closed on Isaac and if he would have had 10 more yards he possibly would have overtaken him,” Kadets coach Chuck Schwartz said.

Out of 27 teams, Vanguard won the 2A-3A boys’ race with 52 points.

In 4A-5A boys, Palmer Ridge took third with 76 points and Widefield was fourth with 183. In 4A-5A girls, TCA took seventh with 217.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Mary’s 3, Salida 2, OT

At Salida: St. Mary’s has grown accustom to tight games – three overtimes and a game decided in the final minutes of regulation.

Pirates coach Gregg Braha didn’t have much to say to his team when it headed to yet another extra session Saturday.

“This is the third overtime for us,” Braha cracked. “I didn’t need to tell them what to do. They knew.”

Connor Timmins scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the 87th minute as St. Mary’s (1-2-1) beat Salida (2-1).

Enrique Pena also scored for the Pirates. Gabe Calhoun made 18 saves.

The Spartans scored twice in the first 10 minutes to go up 2-0 before Timmins scored his first goal of the game in the 29th minute.

Pena tied the game in the 77th minute and Timmins won the game 10 minutes after that.

“For us it’s turning the corner,” Braha said.

Pine Creek 2, Heritage 1

At D20: Christian Seaquist and Andrew Turk each had goals as Pine Creek (2-3) beat Heritage to snap a three-game losing streak.

Colin Welge made three saves and gave up a season-low one goal for the Pikes Peak region 5A No. 2 team.

Pine Creek had lost its last three games by a combined score of 12-3 coming into Saturday.

Palmer Ridge 2, Valor Christian 1

At Don Breese: Brandon Pappas and Dom Lourerio each scored as Palmer Ridge (3-0) beat Valor Christian to stay unbeaten.

Mason Cresap and Michael Rodgers combined for six saves in net.

Coal Ridge 3, Fountain Valley 1

At Coal Ridge: Ian Strine scored for the third straight game, but Fountain Valley (2-2) lost to Coal Ridge (4-0) in a rematch of last year’s 3A semifinals.

The Danes, who’d beaten the Titans 2-1 to move into the state title game, allowed two goals in the second half for their second loss of the year.

Jackson Blaylock had two saves in net for the Pikes Peak region 3A No. 2 team.

Lutheran 5, Evangelical Christian Academy 1

At El Pomar: Parker Johnson’s 14 saves weren’t enough as Lutheran (3-0-1) handed ECA (1-3) its third loss in its first four games of the season.

Five players scored for the Lions – two in the first half and three in the second. Lutheran outshot the Eagles 19-5.

The 4A No. 2 Rangers beat Ralston Valley 25-22, 25-20; University 25-10, 25-19; Niwot 25-12, 25-20; and Bayfield 25-15, 25-11. Gianna Bartalo added 39 digs for Lewis-Palmer.

At Discovery Canyon: Corah Price pitched seven strong innings and homered as Discovery Canyon (5-4) beat La Junta (5-5).

Price allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out 12. She also had three RBIs for the 4A No. 2 team.

The Thunder scored six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Maddie Dewey had two hits and three RBIs. Sami Edwards and Amber Rees each had three hits and one RBI.

Pueblo County Tournament

Cheyenne Mountain 21, Sand Creek 13

At Pueblo County: Katelynn Ralston had four hits and five RBIs as the Indians won in a shootout over Sand Creek.

Nine players for Cheyenne Mountain had at least one hit and seven had multiple hits. Eight players had one hit for the Scorpions.

Michelle Vereline tripled and drove in three runs for the Indians, who bounced back from a 7-0 deficit to take a 18-8 lead after the third. Emily Ford and Breanna Swann each had two RBIs.

Brooke Reid and Cassiah Nugin each had two RBIs for Sand Creek. The Scorpions also had 11 errors.

Valor Christian 10, Vista Ridge 2

At Valor Christian: Alexandria Kilponen gave up her first earned run of the season when Vista Ridge freshman Katey Kelly homered off her in the fourth inning.

Problem was: It wasn’t nearly enough for the Wolves (3-6-1).

Kilponen allowed one hit and two runs (one earned) for her eighth win of the season. Madalyn Mitchell homered for the Eagles (8-0), and Katie Meredith and Lauren Foster each drove in two runs.

Pueblo County Tournament

Montezuma-Cortez 9, TCA 8

TCA 17, Mesa Ridge 12

At Pueblo County: In game one for TCA (3-8), the Titans beat Mesa Ridge (3-5) as the teams combined for 29 runs and 27 hits.

TCA scored five runs in the fifth to take a 15-10 lead and held on for its third win.

In game two, the Titans had just three hits, but managed to rally for six runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 9-8.

Pueblo County Tournament

Canon City 19, Palmer Ridge 5

Palmer Ridge 9, Palmer 7

At Pueblo County: Sara Lynch homered and drove in four runs as Palmer Ridge (6-3) beat Palmer (2-7).

The 4A No. 3 Bears, who had lost to Canon City (2-6) earlier in the day, took a 9-3 lead in the fifth and held on despite a four-run seventh from the Terrors.

Berthoud Tournament

Lewis-Palmer 20, Peak to Peak 0

Longmont 20, Lewis-Palmer 1

At Berthoud: The Rangers (6-6) had 11 batters with at least one hit in their win over Peak to Peak.

Bre Shaffer hit her first home run of the season for Lewis-Palmer. Tess Eaton, Sam Bentley, Rachel Bull, Hannah Carlson, Bridget Cassidy and Cristina Federico each drove in two runs.
