Three Pikes Peak-area prep football games to watch this weekend

While Doherty will be hosting 2014 state champion and perennial state power Cherry Creek in The Gazette Game of the Week, another state champion will be making a visit to Colorado Springs in a big Class 4A showdown.

In addition to that, Rampart gets a chance to slow down Monarch and recapture its rushing game in the process, and Mesa Ridge is hoping for a significant program victory against Denver South.

It’s another busy weekend for high school football in the Springs, kicking off Thursday.

Monarch (1-0) vs. Rampart (1-1)

When: Thursday, 7 p.m.

Where: At District 20 Stadium

What to know: After that impressive ground performance against Liberty in Zero Week in which they rushed for more than 400 yards, the Rams stumbled against Heritage, rushing for 196 yards.

Monarch will play its first game in Colorado this season after defeating Colonial (Fla.) in Orlando in Zero Week. Behind Alex Bradfield’s 201 yards rushing and three touchdowns, Monarch went for 327 yards on the ground against Colonial. It’ll be up to the defenses to stop each other’s ground game.

Mesa Ridge (1-0) vs. Denver South (1-0)

When: Friday, 4 p.m.

Where: At Denver South

What to know: Mesa Ridge is coming off a 38-14 win over Standley Lake in which the Grizzlies led 28-0 at the half. Dylan Mileto threw for two touchdowns on six completions and the Grizzlies rolled up 264 yards rushing, spurred by Dante Johnson’s 189 yards and two TDs. Denver South is a perennial playoff contender. The Rebels crushed Boulder by 39 points last week. Always with a strong ground game, the Rebels pounded the ball for 426 yards, as Marcus Lindsay went for 238 rushing yards and three TDs. Lindsay only carried the ball 15 times, making for an average of 15.9 yards per carry. If the Grizzlies can pull off a win here, teams around the state would take notice.

Windsor (1-0) vs. Pine Creek (0-1)

When: Saturday, 1 p.m.

Where: At District 20 Stadium

What to know: The defending Class 4A state champions head to town to take on the state champs of the prior two years. Windsor rolled in last year’s state title game, beating Loveland, which knocked out two-time defending champ Pine Creek in the semifinals. Then the Eagles opened the season with a loss at Chatfield, despite quarterback Brock Domann throwing for 344 yards and three TDs. The Wizards kept Vista Ridge at arm’s length down the stretch last week, holding on for a season-opening 33-21 victory. Windsor quarterback Connor Apodaca also threw for three TDs.
