Mesa Ridge 38, Standley Lake 14

At C.A. Foster Stadium: The Grizzlies (1-0) had things working in all three phases in their season-opening win over Standley Lake (0-1).

Dante Johnson ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns for Mesa Ridge. Dylan Mileto threw only 10 times – but completed six for 73 yards and two more scores.

The Grizzlies took a 28-0 lead at half thanks also to nice field position and a solid performance from the defense.

“You worked hard with all that summer stuff, all the weight room, all the camps,” Mesa Ridge coach Rob Braaten said. “It’s just nice to see it pay off for the guys. It’s a big win.”

Mesa Ridge went 5-5 and just missed the postseason in 2015.

CSCS 44, Wiggins 14

At CSCS: Justin Engesser threw for 303 yards and five touchdowns, Peter Van Os had four receptions for 155 yards and three scores and CSCS (1-1) got into the win column.

The Lions suffered a 33-22 loss to Crowley County in their home opener.

On Saturday, Jordan Greager added 10 catches for 127 yards and a score. Gabe Danzik caught and rushed for a score.

Hanover 28, Cripple-Creek Victor 25

At Hanover: The Hornets (1-0) won their fifth consecutive season opener by handing Cripple Creek (0-1) its 43rd straight loss.

The 25 points by the Pioneers, however, were the most they’d scored since Oct. 24, 2009.

CROSS COUNTRY

Widefield Cross Country Invitational

At Widefield Community Center: Widefield’s Maximilliano Martinez won his team’s meet for the third straight year. The senior opened a 20-second gap on the rest of the field and won in 16 minutes and 48 seconds.

The Gladiators had five runners in the top 13. Rampart had three runners in the top 10, including Connor McCabe who took second in 17:08.

On the girls’ side, Rampart’s Mathilde Bernard won in 20:34 and the Rams had three girls in the top 10. Durango had four girls in the top six.

Centaurus Invitational

At Centaurus: The Classical Academy’s Tanner Norman dominated the Centaurus Cross Country Invitational

Norman finished in a time of 15:39, beating Isaac Green of Monarch by 11 seconds and third place Charlie Perry (Monarch) by 37 seconds.

TCA finished third as a team, with Monarch winning the event.

Broomfield win the girls’ event. Palmer Ridge finished sixth.

SOFTBALL

Horizon 25, Rampart 24

Rampart 19, Overland 1, 4 innings

At Mountain Range: Megan Schrage hit a pair of home runs and drove in 11 runs in two games for the Rams (4-3). She had nine of those RBIs in a 49-run affair against Horizon (3-2) and two others in a blowout win against Overland (4-3).

Nicole Widner had four RBIs and Kate Frederick drove in three runs in game one. Brittany Head drove in three runs and allowed one run in four innings in game two.

Shelby Sheperd had five total RBIs.

In game one, Horizon overcame an 18-0 deficit and led 23-21 at the end of the fifth inning. Rampart tied the game at 24-all in the sixth before the Hawks won it with a run in the seventh.

Palmer Ridge 16, Florence 4, 5 innings

At Palmer Ridge: Sam Patterson did a little bit of everything as Palmer Ridge (4-0) beat Florence (2-2) to stay undefeated.

Patterson allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings, while striking out four. She also tripled for one of her three hits and drove in two runs.

Aubrey King and Sam Rippley each had two RBIs for the Bears.

St. Mary’s 11, Gunnison 2

At Gunnison: Peyton Richter allowed two runs (one earned) in seven innings and St. Mary’s (2-5) beat Gunnison (0-5) for its second win in three games. The sophomore also had four hits and drove in two runs.

Maddie Horsley had three hits and three RBIs for the Pirates, who outhit the Cowboys 15-6. Lana DeBakey drove in three runs.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Doherty 4, Castle View 1

At Garry Berry Stadium: Junior Delgado scored three more goals, Jesus Gonzalez made six saves and Doherty (2-1) beat Castle View.

Delgado leads Class 5A with five goals.

Cameron Wheeler also scored for the Spartans, and Nathan Ortiz and Danie Hidalgo each had an assist.

Rampart 1, Far Northeast Warriors 1

At District 20 Stadium: Ryan Williams had nine saves, including a series of key saves in overtime, and the Rams (0-1-1) played to a draw.

Dillon O’Neal scored for the Rams.

Rampart lost to Vista Ridge 2-0 in its season opener.

Denver North 3, Mitchell 0

At Garry Berry Stadium: Mitchell (2-1) was shut out for the second straight game.

Luis Perez, Vale Gomez and Alberto Marquez scored for North. Bryan Torres made two saves.

At Fossil Ridge: Penny Schwab scored three goals, Christina Jensen made three saves and the Lancers (1-2) shut out the Sabercats (0-4).

Mackenzie Dudevoir also scored and Beth Schwab added an assist.
