Thursday’s prep roundup: CSCS takes down Fountain Valley in boys’ soccer
Highlights from Thursday’s high school sports scene around the Pikes Peak region.
Boys’ soccer
CSCS 3, Fountain Valley 2
At Fountain Valley: Lookens Smith had a goal and an assist as Pikes Peak 3A No. 2 Colorado Springs Christian School (2-0) took down No. 1 Fountain Valley (0-1). David Benthem and Jared Smit had the other goals for CSCS.
Galen Kelly and Nathaniel Stuger scored for Fountain Valley.
James Irwin 6, ECA 0
At James Irwin: In both teams’ season opener, James Irwin (1-0) scored four goals in the first half to defeat ECA (0-1).
Coronado 7, Falcon 3
At Garry Berry Stadium: Coronado (1-2) got its first win of the season after pouring in five goals in the first half to defeat Falcon (0-2).
Two second-half goals were not enough for Falcon.
Bear Creek 3, Mesa Ridge 1
At Bear Creek: Bear Creek scored all three goals in the first half to defeat Mesa Ridge (1-2).
Mountain Vista 2, Pine Creek 0
At Mountain Vista: Two first-half goals held up for Mountain Vista (1-1-1) as Pikes Peak 5A No. 1 Pine Creek (1-2) couldn’t find the back of the net.
Jake Zink and Colin Welge combined to make nine saves in the loss for Pine Creek.
Doherty 2, Denver South 1
At Denver South: Two goals from senior Junior Delgado led Doherty (1-1) to its first win of the season.
Senior Jesus Gonzales had five saves in the victory.
Cañon City 5, Vanguard 2
At Fountain Valley: Gonzalo Garcia-Camacho scored two goals for 4A Canon City (1-1) as the Tigers defeated Pikes Peak 3A No. 3 Vanguard (0-1).
Sand Creek 5, Harrison 1
At Sand Creek: Sand Creek (2-0) defeated Harrison (1-1).
Omar Gavino had the lone goal for Harrison as Armando Frausto provided the assist.

Evergreen 6, Palmer 0At Evergreen: Palmer (0-5-1) fell to Evergreen (1-0), who jumped out to a 5-0 lead at halftime.

At Don Breese Stadium: Lewis-Palmer improved to 3-1 with a win over Windsor (1-3).

At Vista Ridge: Vista Ridge moved to 3-1 on the season with a win over Pomona (2-1).

Cañon City 37, Pueblo Central 7
At Pueblo Central: After leading 12-7 at half, Pikes Peak 3A No. 2 Cañon City (1-0) scored 19 points in the third quarter to pull away.
Wheat Ridge 36, Palmer 28
At Wheat Ridge: Palmer (0-1) fell in its first game of the season to Wheat Ridge (1-1).
Doherty 46, Rangeview 27
At Rangeview: Doherty (1-0) won their season opener over Rangeview (0-1).

Boys’ golf
Mitchell Invitational
At Cherokee Ridge Golf Course: Led by Sam Levy who posted a 4-over 76 to finish second, Woodland Park took the team title with an overall score of 245.
Jacob Hoekert from Colorado Springs Christian School also shot 76 and took first place via tiebreaker.
The Classical Academy, paced by Liam O’Halloran who finished third with a 7-over 79, took second with a team score of 255. Liberty finished third with a score of 257.
Woodland Park now stands five strokes clear of TCA after three of five Colorado Springs Metro League 4A tournaments.
Field hockey
Kent Denver 5, Liberty 0
At Liberty: Kent Denver put 18 shots on goal to Liberty’s one on its way to a shutout of the Lancers (0-2).
Christina Jensen had three saves and Reagan Onken had one save for Liberty in the loss.
Denver East 5, Cheyenne Mountain 0
At All City Stadium: Denver East (3-0) scored three times in the first half, and Cheyenne Mountain (1-2)couldn’t rally.
Boys’ tennis
Cheyenne Mountain 6, Pueblo Central 1
At Cheyenne Mountain: All four doubles pairings won in straight sets for Cheyenne Mountain, led by the No. 1 duo of Jack Clancy and Drew Connaughton, who won 6-0, 6-1.
Danny Geisz won his No. 3 singles match in straight sets.
Pueblo West 6, Doherty 1
At Pueblo West: The lone victory for Doherty came in No. 3 doubles, as seniors Rafael Hernandez and Jeremy Huffman won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Volleyball
Palmer Ridge 3, Thompson Valley 0
At Palmer Ridge: Senior Jenna McGann had seven kills as Palmer Ridge (3-0) remained undefeated by sweeping Thompson Valley (1-2).
Rampart 3, TCA 0
At Rampart: Pikes Peak 5A No. 1 Rampart (2-0) took down TCA (1-2) in straight sets.
Junior Kira Warren had 11 kills to lead Rampart.

Liberty 3, Vista Ridge 2
At Liberty: Junior Erin Ende had 15 kills to help Liberty (2-1) to victory.

ECA 3, Pikes Peak Christian 1
At ECA: Evangelical Christian Academy (2-1) coach Becky Kyle acknowledged her team made a few mistakes in the victory.
But she was proud of how her team has opened the season after defeating Pikes Peak Christian (1-1).
ECA senior Maggie Kirkpatrick had 14 kills.
Pikes Peak Christian was led by senior April Johns who had seven kills.
Palmer 3, Widefield 1
At Widefield: Palmer (1-0) tackled Widefield (0-2) in its first game.
Seniors Nia Smith and Rachel Pease led the way for Widefield with six kills each.

Doherty 3, ThunderRidge 2
At ThunderRidge: Doherty (3-0) took the fifth set 15-4 to remain undefeated by beating ThunderRidge (0-2).
Senior Kiara Olson led Doherty with 14 kills, including five aces.
Cheyenne Mountain 3, Chaparral 2
At Chaparral: Class 4A defending champion and Pikes Peak 4A No. 1 Cheyenne Mountain (1-0) rallied from two sets down to defeat Chaparral (0-1).
Woodland Park 3, Pueblo Central 2
At Pueblo Central: Woodland Park improved to 2-0 and handed Pueblo Central (2-1) its first loss.
Sophomore Kourtney Cox led the way for Woodland Park with 15 of the team’s 41 kills.
Canon City 3, Pueblo County 1
At Canon City: Led by junior Bailey Boccaccio’s 12 kills, Canon City (2-0) defeated Pueblo County (0-2).
Senior Alyssa Loveless added blocks for the Tigers.
Cross Country
Vista Ridge Joe Davis Classic Invitational
At Monument Valley Park: On the boys side, the duo of junior Awet Beraki (16 minutes, 27 seconds) and Andrew Bentley (16:30) finished first and second, respectively, for Palmer as the Terrors took the team title.
Discovery Canyon, paced by Joseph Dicke who finished fifth, took second place as a team, while Falcon took third.
On the girls’ side, Liberty’s Allison Mann led her team to a fourth-place finish, as she took the individual title with a time of 18:42.
Palmer also took the girls’ team title, holding off Cheyenne Mountain by two points.
Discovery Canyon, led by fourth-place Liberty Ricca, took third.
Softball
Widefield 9, Cheyenne Mountain 8
At Widefield: Sophomore Dana Atencio hit a two-run walk-off home run for Widefield (2-4) as the Gladiators dropped Cheyenne Mountain (0-2).
The home run was part of six runs Widefield scored in the last two innings.
Limon 15, St. Mary’s 9
At St. Mary’s: Limon (2-1) scored eight runs in the seventh inning to pull away from St. Mary’s (1-5).
Sophomores Peyton Richter and Mackenzie Pepper both had two RBIs for St. Mary’s.
Rampart 10, Coronado 0, 5 innings
At Holmes Middle School: Rampart (3-1) was all over Coronado (0-5) as the game ended after five innings.
Senior Megan Schrage and junior Shelby Sheperd combined to pitch the shutout for Rampart.
No stats were provided for Coronado.
Fountain-Fort Carson 4, Liberty 3, 10 innings
At Liberty: Pikes Peak 5A No. 2 Fountain-Fort Carson (5-0) scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning and held Liberty (1-1) to two runs to decide the game.
F-FC pitcher Corrina Porras went all 10, allowing 10 hits with seven strikeouts.
Liberty pitcher Mahealani Haegele had 12 strikeouts in 91/3 innings.
Falcon 6, Pueblo East 2
At Falcon: A three-run fifth inning paced Falcon (4-1), as the Falcons defeated Pueblo East (1-1).
Sophomore Taylor Striebel allowed two runs on nine hits in the complete-game effort.
