Dee Dowis wore No. 6 during his legendary career as Air Force’s quarterback. On Saturday, Dowis’ initials will be placed on the field at the 6 yard-line at Falcon Stadium.

Dowis, 48, was killed in a traffic crash near Atlanta early Monday, leaving behind a wife, son and daughter.

Air Force will honor Dowis with a moment of silence and a video board display just before the national anthem prior to Saturday’s noon season opener against Abilene Christian.

The No. 6 on the 6 will be for the opening game only, but the Falcons plan to wear helmet decals honoring Dowis for the full season.

Funeral services for the 1989 Heisman Trophy finalist will be held Friday in Greenville, South Carolina. Air Force’s football team will be represented at the funeral by Steve Senn, a former classmate of Dowis who serves as the Falcons’ director of recruiting and player personnel. Between 25 and 30 of Dowis’ Air Force teammates are expected at the funeral, where former coach Fisher DeBerry will have a part in the service.
