Denver Broncos in full pads

Broncos in full pads

Englewood: The Denver Broncos were in full pads for practice on Saturday at Dove Valley for Day 3 of training camp – the first time in full protective gear in nearly six months.

“Everything slows down (with pads),” head coach Gary Kubiak said Saturday, but it gave the team a chance to display real game situations with 11-on-11 drills.

Injuries nothing serious

Friday morning, defensive linemen Phil Taylor and Sylvester Williams left practice with injuries. Kubiak said Williams, who hurt his shoulder could be back early next week. Taylor injured his knee and could return as early as Sunday.

“MRIs on both of them are fine,” Kubiak reported Saturday morning.

The injuries gave Adam Gotsis, the Aussie defensive lineman out of Georgia State, a chance to take more snaps. The Broncos drafted Gotsis in the second round, despite the senior playing just seven games his final year of college. He tore his ACL on Oct. 31 in a game against Virginia. Denver is hoping he could be ready to join the defensive line rotation come September.

Kubiak is working on getting Gotsis back to full stamina. He practiced for just an hour and 10 minutes with Von Miller and Russell Okung.

Quarterbacks update

Paxton Lynch practiced with the No. 3 offense, and at times looked inconsistent Saturday, but he ended practice with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Kalif Raymond. All three Broncos quarterbacks struggled to make connections on the long ball.

At times, the rookie has looked overwhelmed by the speed of NFL play, but Kubiak noted the learning curve is natural for young quarterbacks.

“That’s football,” Kubiak said. “You’re gonna go through highs and lows. it’s our job to build him up. It’s also our job to motivate him and get him going. Hopefully, there is a little bit of both.”

The practice-ending drive, which Kubiak said will be a staple this camp, displayed the rookie quarterback’s ability to take his offense down the field. Granted, it’s against the third defensive unit, but Kubiak liked what he saw.

Sanchez struggled with deep passes, but looked sharp on shorter attempts.

“I think Trevor (Siemian) and Mark (Sanchez) are doing really well,” Kubiak said. “I was looking at some numbers last night and they are good. They are consistent in what they’re doing.”

Brandon Marshall: Madden superstar

Marshall was rated the second best middle linebacker in the video game Madden 17, behind the Panthers’ Luke Kuechly.

“It feels great,” Marshall said. “That’s pretty dope. I didn’t even think that I would get a 90 (rating) so I’ve got to step it up. Hopefully, I can get up there in the mid-90s.”

Marshall is still the second-highest rated linebacker on the Broncos. Miller earned a perfect 99 rating in the video game.
