Poll: Democrats showing well in Colorado
Democrats are looking good in Colorado – historically a swing state – according to a poll released Wednesday by Monmouth University.
Hillary Clinton has a 13-point lead over Donald Trump, according to 404 voters asked by phone this week who they would vote for in November.
Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat, also had a 13-point lead over his Republican challenger, El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn.
The poll has a 4.9 percent margin of error.
“Clinton does better among practically every demographic in Colorado than she does nationally,” Patrick Murray, director of Monmouth’s Polling Institute, said in a statement released with the poll. “It is way too early to call, but if this dynamic holds, she could end up with the largest electoral margin for a Democrat here since 1964.”
Murray notes that since 1964, Democrats have only won Colorado’s electoral votes three times, twice with President Barack Obama.
Despite Clinton’s strong lead, she and Trump both struggle with how voters view them in Colorado.
According to the poll, 24 percent of voters have a favorable opinion of Trump, while 64 percent have an unfavorable view of him. Clinton has a 37 percent favorable rating compared with a 50 percent unfavorable view.
Additionally, 40 percent of Colorado voters polled think Clinton acted criminally in how she managed a private email server while she was Secretary of State.
Bennet has a substantial lead over Glenn, but like a survey released Tuesday by the Republican-leaning Harper Polling, Bennet seems to be struggling with name recognition. In both polls three of 10 voters polled had no opinion of Bennet – good or bad.
According to the Monmouth poll, however, 70 percent of voters polled have no opinion of Glenn.
