SAN FRANCISCO — Through the late summer months last season, Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez raced step-by-step in a home run derby through the National League, one-upping each other at every turn. This season, the Rockies teammates streaked right into the All-Star Game.

Arenado and Gonzalez on Tuesday were named to the NL all-star team as reserves after a league-wide vote of players. Colorado rookie shortstop Trevor Story will remain in all-star limbo. He will be part of a fan vote-off for the final NL roster spot.

Story is up against Giants first baseman Brandon Belt, Brewers third baseman Ryan Braun, Diamondbacks third baseman Jake Lamb and Pirates outfielder Starling Marte for the final spot.

Arenado will play third base in his second consecutive All-Star Game, behind the Cubs’ Kris Bryant, who was selected to start by a fan vote. Gonzalez, who was picked for his third all-star game and first since 2013, will play in relief of the Nationals’ Bryce Harper in right field.
