Klee blog: KSE-owned teams facing attendance crisis

Northrop, Boecore celebrate $1 billion milestone

Welcome to Colorado, Tim Howard.

The Rapids no longer have a winning problem. Colorado’s MLS outfit sits in first place in the Western Conference and just added Howard, who saves everything. Can the USMNT soccer hero save KSE’s attendance woes?

The three major teams owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment in Denver are stuck in an attendance crisis. In their current or most recent seasons, here’s how they rank in the MLS/NHL/NBA attendance standings:

Rapids, 18th (out of 20 teams)

Avalanche, 19th (of 30)

Nuggets, 30th (of 30)

Hmmm. The Rockies are hovering just below .500 but still rank 12th in attendance. The Broncos, well, you can sell your first born for a seat.

I’m the first to say it’s not easy putting backsides in the seats. In Colorado, there’s too much else to do, too many ways to spend your money, too many entertainment options outside Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and Pepsi Center.

That’s understood.

But when two squads have no trouble piling folks into the stands — win (Broncos) or lose (Rockies) — it makes you wonder about the others, doesn’t it?

Say, Mr. Howard. Did you bring any friends?
