Frustration soon turned into determination for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks.

The United Soccer League club will get another shot at the ninth-place Real Monarchs Salt Lake at 7 p.m. Wednesday in their second game against their Western Conference foe in four days.

The frustration stems from arguably the second-year club’s best offensive performance generating scoring chances, only to see 15 shots sail wide of the opposing net and the remaining eight stopped by the RMSL goalkeeper Eduardo Fernandez. A goal by Elder Torres was all the visitors needed to win Sunday in a game that could easily have been 4-1 if the fourth-place Switchbacks (7-4-2) could have found the net.

“You hit it right on the head,” Switchbacks forward Aaron King said. “We need someone to step up and put the ball in the net.”

“It was very frustrating because we had six quality scoring chances,” Colorado Springs coach Steve Trittschuh said. “We played well enough to win the game.

“We are so close to where we were last season when we were scoring a lot of goals. We are an inch away.”

That only fuels the host’s determination to win Wednesday against a team now in the league playoff picture. Sunday’s win moved the Real Monarchs up from 12th to ninth. Wednesday’s game is rescheduled from a snowed-out game April 30.

With a red card for center defensive back Christian Ibeagha, the Switchbacks will need to shuffle their back line. That leaves the hosts missing both starting center backs from the season opener with Josh Phillips (shoulder injury) an estimated 3-4 weeks away from returning to action. Regardless, the Switchbacks are determined to snap their first two-game USL losing streak this season.

“We need to jump on them early,” forward Miguel Gonzalez said.

“We just played these guys so motivation won’t be a problem,” King said. “We’re hungry and anxious to get this bad taste out of our mouths.”
