2016 Gazette features/A&E intern Kelsey Kendall
Kelsey Kendall loves to sit and listen, and even when her friends don’t realize it, she is always moving the conversation through her head, placing details into context, trying to figure out just what means what.
Kendall has done plenty of listening in her lifetime. As a journalism and anthropology major at Kansas State University, she consciously thinks about how others act around her, noting the minute details of day-to-day life that create the norms of society.
In journalism, she uses these skills to understand and connect with others, whether it’s a musical artist or social worker.
“I have no problem just walking up to people and asking questions,” she said.” I say, ‘Hey, this is what I’m doing. Can I get to know you and find out your story?'”
As a self-proclaimed “military brat”, Kendall moved eleven times before landing in Wichita, Kansas, where she now calls home. Journalism was an ideal career choice because she has always loved writing and listening to others’ stories.
“I get to meet so many cool people,” Kendall said. “I love interacting with people and this is a great way of being nosy and getting to ask people questions.”
Kendall will be working as a Features and A&E intern this summer at the Gazette, and she hopes to tell the stories the community has not yet heard.
