The Gazette Girls’ Tennis Coach of the Year: Dave Adams, Cheyenne Mountain

The best coaching job Dave Adams may have done was off the court.

After Daniela Adamczyk and Jessica Metz expressed doubt in playing their senior seasons, the Cheyenne Mountain coach and many of his players helped convince them to return.

And two months later, Adamczyk took second in No. 2 singles, Metz won a title in No. 2 doubles and Cheyenne Mountain won its eighth straight title at the Class 4A girls’ tennis tournament in Pueblo.

“If we had missed either Daniela or Jessica it would’ve been a lot closer as far as the state tournament goes,” Adams said. “If we hadn’t had either of those two (on the team), I’ll just say this: when the girls found out they were going to play this year, some of them were actually in tears. Almost all of them were jumping up and down and running around the court.

“They knew what those two meant for our team. They were really the top two returning players from the year before.”

Under Adams, Cheyenne Mountain now has the longest active championship streak in Colorado girls’ tennis. Cherry Creek had its 19 consecutive state-title 5A run snapped by Fairview up in Denver this year.

“I don’t get stuck in this whole streak thing,” Adams said. “Some luck is a part of it. There’s no question that you have to be somewhat fortunate. But we just have had a good streak of two or three pretty strong players in almost every class. That helps your depth and helps you build.”

A little persuasion here and there never hurt either.
