Monday's prep roundup: Pine Creek qualifies for state girls' golf for first time

GIRLS’ GOLF

5A Southern Regional

At Colorado Springs Country Club: Pine Creek qualified for the Class 5A state golf tournament as a team for the first time in program history.

Elly Carlson shot a 14-over 86 to finish an area-best 11th in the region. Halley McDonald (97) and Elizabeth Pendleton (97) grabbed the remaining two state qualification spots after two playoff holes.

“It was a product of determination and great character,” Eagles coach Shane Brown said of his team’s state berth.

After the round, McDonald and Pendleton – along with Mountain Vista’s Emily Jensen and Legacy’s Maddy Rodriguez – went to a playoff to decide the final two state spots.

The foursome all shot double bogey on the first playoff hole to force a second. McDonald then knocked in a par and Pendleton bogeyed to seal their fates.

“My coach was saying you have to go out and get the things you want in life,” McDonald said. “We did and just pulled through as a team.”

Liberty’s Sarah MacDonald also made the cut with a 96.

Ralston Valley won the region.

5A Central Regional

At South Suburban Golf Course: Rampart’s Arielle Keating shot a 10-over 82 and finished seventh.

She qualified for state by nine strokes.

Yet there was plenty to be desired.

“She wasn’t happy about it,” Rampart coach Brad Keating said. “But she qualified, so it’s good.”

The sophomore hit the ball well and ended the round with 10 pars.

The one problem was her putting – she three-putted on six holes.

“The greens were tough,” coach Keating said. “She hit the ball well. Just couldn’t score it.”

Regis Jesuit won the region.

5A Northern Regional

At Ptarmigan Golf and Country Club: Coronado’s Allie Garcia and Madi Eurich both shot a 19-over 91 to punch their tickets to state.

This will be Garcia’s third state appearance and Eurich’s second.

“They both hit amazing long shots today,” Cougars coach Kelly Hodge said. “The putts just wouldn’t drop.”

Monarch won the region. The cut was 98.
