Siblings are often good for a hug and a laugh. Perhaps a bruised ego, too.

Widefield senior thrower Riley Prater, a potential Class 4A finalist in both the girls’ shot put and discus, knows the contrast fairly well.

Ahead of her in the high school throwing ranks is Logan, her twin sister. Most consider Logan the best female discus thrower in the state – and not by a small margin.

“Throwing was kind of my thing and she kind of followed me into it,” Riley cracked. “When she does good now I have to remind her, ‘Hey, I am the reason you throw.'”

During the rescheduled Coronado Cougar Classic on Monday, Logan continued her dominance in girls’ discus, winning comfortably despite a throw of 139 feet and 10 inches that was nowhere near her season best at Garry Berry Stadium. She followed it up with a second-place finish in shot put (36-3.50), only behind Pine Creek’s Sydney Marr (36-7).

Behind her was Riley, who took third in shot put (36-0.5) and fourth in discus (117-11).

The sibling chatter was not far behind that.

“We’ve always had a little love-hate competition between us,” Logan laughed. “I’ve always followed her lead throwing … that’s why I’m doing now it to be honest.”

In a perfectly harmonious world, the Widefield sisters would split golds at the state meet when it rolls around in about three weeks.

Logan would top her season-best throw of 147-9, which is already about 13 feet better than her best hurl of last year, and win 4A discus. Riley, meanwhile, would win shot put, where she placed sixth (five spots ahead of Logan) a year ago.

This precise scenario, of course, is a long shot.

“It’d be cool,” Riley said, “but if she does beat me (in shot put), I’d be like ‘good job.’ I might be a little sad … but either way it’s good.”

What the sisters can count on is solid competition.

Widefield is the only 4A program with a reasonable chance at placing two in the top eight in both girls’ throwing events at state.

Logan, who will throw for Nebraska-Kearney next year, will be the favorite in discus coming off a fifth-place finish there a season ago. She also ranks second in 4A shot put.

Riley, meanwhile, is ranked seventh in discus and fifth in shot put in 4A. She has a good chance to land a pair of medals as well.

“She pushes me and I push her,” Riley said. “She’s proud of me and I’m proud of her.”
