9-month-old boy dies after becoming unresponsive at Florence day care

Manitou Springs homeless man paralyzed after 'brutal' attack by transient

A 9-month-old boy died Friday morning after he became unresponsive at an in-home day care center in Florence, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

The infant, Rhett Walker, stopped breathing at the facility, according to Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller. The cause of his death, however, remains under investigation.

Deputies were called at 9:37 a.m. Friday to a licensed in-home day care on the 4700 block of Drivers Road, which is about 40 miles southwest of Colorado Springs.

The boy was then taken to St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, where he was pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The only licensed day care provider on that block is Christine Humphrey, whose facility is licensed for six children, according to a Colorado Department of Human Services database.

A licensing history report showed three complaints logged at the facility since 2008 – the most recent of which came in March. Each allegation proved unfounded, the report said.

A call from The Gazette to the facility was not returned Monday.

Keller performed an autopsy Monday, though he said results would not be available for four to six weeks.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office did not release any other information Monday afternoon about the infant’s death.
