Scott Tipton gets a Democratic challenger
WASHINGTON —U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton’s quiet run for re-election got more interesting Thursday with the entry of Gail Schwartz, a former state lawmaker.
Schwartz, a Democrat, filed notice with the Federal Election Commission declaring her intent to challenge Tipton, a third-term Republican incumbent who represents the Colorado district that encompasses the Western Slope.
Her campaign did not return e-mails seeking comment, though her FEC filings show the creation of a new political committee dubbed “Gail Schwartz for Congress” to handle fundraising in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District.
The race largely has been an afterthought this cycle, with the biggest question being whether Tipton would jump into the fight against U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democratic incumbent up for re-election this year.
